I have stayed in many hotels reviewed by tripadvisor and this is definitely one of the best. The staff are very friendly and cheerful, the all-in breakfast is an excellent start to the morning, the hotel is situated within walking distance to the magnificent sites in the old city. There's a good range of restaurants one street up from the hotel. The hotel has free wifi access and guide books that you can borrow.

This hotel is the friendliest, cleanest and most welcoming hotel I have stayed in. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The staff, especially Fatih on the desk, are so friendly and helpul. The rooms are beautifully furnished and well kept. Breakfasts are really enjoyable, with a wide range of food; we were made to feel special having pastries and cakes cooked for us by family. The views from the roof terrace are lovely across the Bosphorus. It is a central location within easy walking distance of the main mosques, shops, restaurants and markets.

We arrived at 6am after a long haul flight from Australia, and were immediately taken to the rooftop breakfast room for coffee and breakfast (although our booking did not officially commence until the afternoon). Watching the sunrise and the traffic on the waterways was an amazing introduction to Istanbul. We enjoyed this start to each day throughout our 11 day stay at the Osmanhan.

Although small, with 2 rooms on each floor and a spiral staircase to the rooftop, the hotel has helpful, friendly staff on the front desk 24 hours a day. 2 other obliging staff members prepare and serve an excellent contintental breakfast (juice, tea, coffee, cereals, yoghurt, breads, fruit, salad, cheese and olives) and service the rooms. The owner arrived for breakfast each day with delicious pastries and cake his wife had made.

The rooms are very comfortable, attractively furnished, and spotlessly clean. Because the hotel is on a corner, the windows overlook the cobbled streets providing an ever-changing view of daily life.

The Hotel is located in Sultanahmet within a short walk of the Blue Mosque, Aya Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the underground Water Cisterns, and various museums. If wanting to go further afield, it is a 5 minute (downhill) stroll to the suburban railway in the morning and a 10 minute (downhill) stroll from the tram in the afternoon. The taxi rank is at the door. Extend the morning downhill walk by 5 minutes and you are at the fascinating seafront parks.

50 meters above the hotel is a street with many wonderful restaurants for the evening meal. A stroll along the nearby streets shopping (or window shopping) is as splendid as visiting a museum.

We loved this tiny hotel, which is very clean, friendly and comfortable. It is near to Aya Sophia, Topkapi, Blue Mosque and you can go there by five-minute walk. Although we were planning to stay only one night, we stayed three nights. The rooms are well-lighted and well-equipped. The hotel is cleaned thoroughly and sterilized everyday. (I think it is very important for a family with children.) We had breakfast at the terrace floor with the fabulous seascape of Marmara. We saw even dolphins swimming near the shore! My daughter was very very excited. She also liked the hotel staff (Fatih, Ahmet and Leyla). They are very kind and friendly. So, we spent the stay very comfortably. We strongly recommend this hotel. (The owner can speak Japanese.)

We could not have been more warmly recieved when we arrived in Istanbul. Most helpful information was given to us by Fatih and all the staff which made the trip even more enjoyable. The hotel is well sited, with delightful views of the Bosphorus from the terrace and is very convenient to an area with a selection of restaurants. The rooms were most comfortable and the breakfasts were delicious - especially the local specialities provided by Mustapha's wife.

Short Review

The Osmanhan Hotel is a brand new, tiny 8 room hotel providing great service in the historic Sultanamet district. All the major sites are within an easy 5 – 20 minutes walk. We hope to return to Istanbul in the near future and stay at the Osmanhan.

Long Review

Istanbul is a city filled with historical gems such as Aya Sofya (the Basilica of Hagia Sophia), the Blue Mosque, Galata Tower, the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar, Topkapi Palace, and the Underground Cistern. One might add the Osmanhan Hotel to the list. Though new and tiny – just 8 rooms -- the Osmanhan Hotel is affordable (even more so considering the sumptuous Turkish breakfast included), provides impeccable service, has beautifully renovated rooms, and is that perfectly located in the Sultanamet district (5-20 minutes from everything). Note: The Osmanhan is a short 2-3 minute walk from the Four Seasons Hotel – so you can rest assured you’re in a “good” location.

The four of us (husband, wife, and two college aged daughters) stayed in two rooms for 6 days. Mustafa, Fatih, Ahmet, and others were most gracious to us whether offering suggestions on where to go, how to say “no” or “thank you” in Turkish, filling our water bottles, or talking about their families. On several occasions, Mustafa, the owner, brought homemade pastries from his wife to add to the breakfast feast, which included breads, cheeses, eggs, fruits, meats, salads, and Turkish coffee, tea, and yogurt. Fatih was staffing the front desk the most when we were leaving or the returning to the hotel, so we got to know him the best. He is very knowledgeable and helpful.

Istanbul is a friendly city, and is easy to get around, whether by walking, taking the tram, or hopping a public ferry from “Europe” to “Asia.” All of the museums have signs in Turkish and English. The Osmanhan hotel is in the “old” part of the city near almost all major attractions; you can take a long walk or take a tram to Taksim, the “new” part of the city. Whereas the “old” city is lined with stores selling traditional goods such as rugs, souvenirs, et al, the “new” city is ultra modern, where trendy stores sell the latest fashions. Be sure to visit the rug store run by Hamit Balkir, Mustafa’s brother. We loved the tribal rugs and the stories they told, such as a rug that is sewn in two halves and joined by the wedding of the bride and groom.

Istanbul is also a historically tolerant city. During the Inquisition, Turkey welcomed many Jews and Moors who were forced to leave Spain. The Official Turkish Website such as www.kulturturizm.gov.tr list many Churches, Mosques and Synagogues on their must see list.

We’d love to return to Istanbul. When we do, we’ll stay at the comfort, hospitality and location of the Osmanhan.

I've travelled several times to Istanbul in the past, and have had varied experiences in hotels there, as can be expected. I can say without exception, that the Osman Han is the best hotel in which I've stayed in Istanbul, or in all of Turkey for that matter! I make numerous short trips each year on business to various cities (mainly in Europe), and would put the Osman Han in the very top handful of hotels I've stayed in (anywhere) in recent years.

The hotel is small, personal, beautifully furnished and located in the heart of the Sultanahmet district. Rooms are airy, spotlessly clean, and quiet. The bed was brand new, the ensuite bathroom immaculate, with instant hot water. Also, my room had a wonderful antique carpet on the floor! There's free fast wireless broadband in the hotel, and many amenities very nearby.

Particularly enjoyable was the friendly, relaxed atmosphere, between the owners, staff and guests; I had quite a few interesting chats over breakfast and in the reception area with other guests, and with the owner Hamit, who is a very well travelled individual. The reception staff were exceedingly helpful and discrete. Even the cleaning staff, who obviously have limited foreign language skills, went out of their way to be kind and helpful.

The breakfast was really exceptional (both in the quality of food, and the choice), and is served on the roof level, where there's a terrace with a magnificent view of the sea and the Asian side of the city. I look forward to my next visit to Istanbul later this year in warmer weather, so I can partake of breakfast outside on the terrace, while gazing across at the Sea of Marmara!

I read with bemused astonishment some of the reviews below, one comparing the hotel to "a dungeon" (?), another making the staff sound like small-time hustlers!! I can't begin to fathom how anyone could arrive at such an impression - perhaps they entered some kind of parallel universe while en-route to Istanbul? But I'm reminded of the old Yorkshire saying: "there's nowt so queer as folk..."

I'll certainly be returning to the Osman Han!
