This is a real find. As other reviewers have said, the young host is charming, warm and friendly. He gave us the wifi password straight away and even pointed to a power point to charge our phones before we'd even got the menu!

The "balloon bread" was great (not heavy like the pides and pizzas), stuffed vine leaves excellent (really tasty rather than the usual bland rice) and mint yogurt dip was creamy and delicious. I had the lamb testy, a (fairly) tender lamb casserole cooked in a sealed terracotta pot, which was broken open spectacularly at the table.
Probably the best meal we had in Istanbul and very reasonable. Certainly the warmest service without being at all pushy. Go there after your tourist trips to the bazaar, palace or bazaar.

Very good service, very good food, excellent value overall. Very kind owner, not very sophisticated but really nice atmosphere and quiet place. Special tribute for the very nice, really well thought of, soft music (at the right volume) which accompanies dining.

Although it is situated near a very busy street at Sultanahmet area, this restaurant is much more quiet than the bunch of restos just around the corner and probably 20-30% cheaper. One of the few restaurants to serve lamb kebap with minced meat, too, which for us made a difference to the better. Also, the special Turkish bread they prepare is just excellent!

Only less positive part is the dessert collection, which is rather limited. But for some unexplicable reason, dessert seems to be a challenge for many restos in Istanbul.

Important detail: While there, we noticed many people who were coming back for a second or third time.

Overall, strong thumbs up: just go!!

we spent 4 days in istanbul, and Malkoc was located just near our hotel. as we were wondering up towards the four seasons, my 4 year old son took a liking to the young man out front, so we promised we would come the following day. The bread was amazing, home made in a traditional style. The lamb kabab was the best we had had in istanbul and the service was so friendly and kind hearted that we went back the following day. The price was also very good compared with other places in the area. The decor is simple,. but the food and service make up for this! We left feeling like we were a part of the family!

We were in Istanbul for 10 days and ate at this place near where we were staying in Sultanahmet twice. It is just a touch off the main drag. They have a young guy out the front calling people in and two older guys lining up the food. We had a kid with us and they were exceptionally kind and helpful and making sure we had something for him to eat, and didnt mind if he went for a wander around the restaurant.

The food there is very good and we found that whereas in most other places in the area doing mixed grills and and breads with a few glasses of wine were lifting about 100 YTL or 50 Euro off us these guys were coming in at about 75 YTL. The restaurant itself is comfortable enough without being either outstanding or spartan. No idea on whether they take reservations or not, but they were open fairly late.

We have just returned from our second vist to the Malkoc in Sultanahmet area of Istanbul. It was a handy distance from our Hotel the Amiral Palace (can recommend this Hotel too) We decided to return here after an excellent meal we had a couple of days previously, the restaurant serves Turkish cuisine as well as a few international dishes. We really enjoyed our meal again and would highly recommend this restaurant for good quality food at a very good price.
