“Happy with my stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2014

I only stayed for 1 night, for catching an early morning flight, but I really felt comfortable in this hotel. Upon arrival I was greeted by very friendly and cheerful staff. That's always a great start! Since I stayed for such short time, I didn't get to explore the facilities but I did get to taste their wonderful breakfast buffet!

With friendly staff and a good breakfast, you come a long way :)

Not a very nice location at all - high traffic, run down rubble strewn neighborhood, only thing in walking distance is a gas station. Hotel folks were nice, a good pizza from hotel restaurant, too -- but I'd recommend it only for an early airport flight. Also, the room was quite warm and even after telling the desk it was truly too hot (they agreed), nothing was done.

My husband and I stayed there and were very pleased with the room, restaurant, friendly
personnel and convenient shuttle service.
We were especially appreciative of the help that Gurkan and Turan gave us with regard to
our lap top, they were very helpful and patient with us as we are not real computer savvy.
After traveling for six weeks it was a nice end to our vacation.

Room Tip: High floor with view of the airport.

After I missed my flight because of delayed, I've been offered to stay in this hotel for the night and that was the best thing that happened that day (if we don't count airplane wasn't crashed). Nice accommodation, dinner was nice, Turkish food, rooms big and comfortable, a bit too cold even AC was off whole the time and outside was quite warm. Other then that it was all right.

Tired, you arrive. Confronted by a fearsome security barrier, you wait while your taxi is examined with a mirror, and the barrier is opened. You leave your taxi, and enter the hotel through a rotating door which is too small for you and your suitcase at the same time. On the other side, the way in is blocked by some other poor soul trying to put a suitcase through the baggage xray machine. You struggle and manage to do the same - the mouth of the xray is three feet off the floor.

Once you check in, you go to the elevator (or lift). This, of course, has a 'security' feature: you must insert your room key card in a slot at a precisely regulated velocity, in order to get a green light, so that the lift buttons will work. If the velocity is slightly incorrect, you get a red light, and the buttons remain inert.

The elevator buttons are silver, with built-in transparent silvery floor numbers. You press one, and it lights up showing that instead of 7 you pressed 9. Other guests in the lift frown at you as you now find and press 7. They are going to 12.

You reach your room and turn on the television. After some time, a menu appears, Item 1 is the TV. You find the remote control, hidden away in a cardboard sleeve that only serves to hinder you and press 1. And wait. Another menu appears with one item: 1-Television. You press 1 and wait again, and yet another one-item menu appears. Again, and this time, you get what appears to be a list of channels. About eight of them, four in Turkish and four in English. Bloomberg, CNN, BBC World (which used to be OK, but today is rubbish. Oh well.

So, a quick shower before dinner. The shower is good, with an excellent thermostat, but unfortunately, it's only half-glazed, so the bathroom floor is now awash.

You dry yourself off, get into your pyjamas, and pick up the phone for room service. There doesn't appear to be a room service number, so you call the desk and ask. O no, we don't do room service. We have a "Market" where you can buy crisps and chocolate bars and water and Pepsi (no Coke!), but not actual food.

You get to bed. Comfortable. Next morning, you get up and go down to breakfast. Imagine a breakfast buffet at Fawlty Towers. It happens in the hotel restaurant, which is cramped, and the buffet is made even more chaotic by being organised in a way that makes you pass through the narrow spots for the things you need at each phase of breakfast.

There is a pleasant set of fruits - apple, peach, pear, watermelon, but in place of Turkey's joy, real yoghurt, you are offered little plastic pots of something called Activia. Having eaten your fruit, washed down with a glass of orangeade (described as 'juice'), it's time for some cold meats and cheese, and some bread. The bread knife is blunt; I really couldn't be bothered to ask if this was for security reasons. So you compress the bread into squashed, mangled slices. The cold meats and cheese lack variety when compared with other hotels in what I imagine is a similar class. Now for the butter. Next to the bread? No, you have to fight your way through the mass of people around the omelette bar, which where the butter is kept.

That done, time for something hot. The hot dishes are inadequate. I won't go into too much detail, but the scrambled eggs look like something out of a zombie film, and, when you've summoned up enough courage to eat them, don't taste much better.

So, a croissant. The croissants are ket under a lamo, to keep them hot and soggy. The lamp is red, making it impossible to choose a light or a dark-skinned croissant. It doesn't matter though.

And so you survive, for two weeks. The traffic between the hotel and your place of work (near the airport) is especially atrocious, even by Istanbul's standards.

Finally the blessed day of departure arrives. You are in the lobby, waiting for the airport shuttle, and with a couple of minutes to spare, you decide to take a photo of the lobby, which is quite pretty (perhaps to attempt to compensate the other failings). Oh, my, why a photo! The security guard comes over from the xray machine: "You can't take photos here".

I tip the shuttle driver handsomely. If staying in a place like this is so awful, what must it be like to have to work there?

Room Tip: The best rooms are in other hotels

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2014

My husband and 12 year old daughter stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Istanbul Airport for one night on Sunday, June 8, 2014 because we had a 23 hour layover on Turkish Airlines. After our flight landed at 5:15pm, we were able to catch the 6:30pm free shuttle to the left of the taxis. It's a white shuttle that says “Courtyard Marriott.” We see the driver shut his door and we waive to him, and he kindly stopped and open his doors for us. It's a short 10 minute drive to the hotel.

When you enter the hotel, there is a metal detector that you put your luggage/bag through, and you walk through. We check in, and I had a prepaid rate of 70 Euros. The person who checked us in offered us an upgrade that included their breakfast and free wifi in the room for an extra 30 Euros. We declined.

Our room was nice and clean with two Queen beds. Toiletries included shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion. There was a small refrigerator with a water for a free, but the refrigerator was not cold.

We brought our electic adapters for Europe and they did not work in the hotel room. I had researched that the adapters for Europe would work in Italy. We checked with the hotel and they wanted to charge us to buy an adapter. We declined since we were only staying for one night.

We wanted to catch some dinner at a local place. We read about driving to a local outlet mall, either 212 Istanbul Power Outlet or Star City Outlet Mall. For less than 10 TL, you can take a taxi to either one. We were going to go to 212, but our taxi driver said that Star City was better, so we went there. On the 4th floor, there is a food court with various places to eat.

The next morning, we went to the lobby at 6:45am to catch the 7am free airport shuttle. We're glad we went early because eventually there was a lot of people, and a few weren't able to get on the shuttle. They did say that they were going to have another shuttle at 7:30am (instead of every hour at 8am.)

Conveniently, there's an ATM machine in the lobby that we used.

Overall, we had an enjoyable stay.

Pros: 10 minutes from the airport + Free shuttle. Large room and bathroom. Good price for the room. Free internet in the hall (disconnect after 30min). Soundproffing good.
Cons: I was not considered as an Elite member. Room need improvement (see pictures) - too much security that make me unconfortable (see pictures). Not smiling staff. Market products too expensive (2 TRL for a small bootle of water)- walk to the orther side of the street and go to the gaz station where the price are real Istanbul price (.75 TRL for a big bootle of water). No free internet in the room. Experiment problem with the office desk - not able to print my boarding pass :-(.
