“Truly A Home Away from Home”
Reviewed 10 June 2012

Great location. Within walking distance to almost everything, but within a long block of the tramway to everything else. Only 4 Turkish Lira (about $2.50 USD) to airport or order a pickup at the door for 5 Euros, about $6.25 USD.
Can (John) and all the staff always there to serve and encourage whether you're ready to go or totally tired. Directions, information, suggestions for sights, shopping and eating.
Their attitude encouraged guests to engage with each other, whether in the lobby seating/eating area or on the rooftop,
Located on a busy narrow through street. I enjoyed the bustle of noise, but some did not.
Shared toilets and showers, but only a short wait if any at all. The free computers did not like Yahoo! in English, but John always got it to work. Simple but good breakfast with great hours.
The perfect place to call home in Istanbul.

Room Tip: Ask for a lower bunk, if you need one.

Exactly what you need in a hostel: Prime but calm location, clean rooms, breakfast served till 10:30, very helpful staff. Be warned bathroom and toilets are shared - often the case in hostels.
There's no luxury here, but you do not expect that when looking at the price tag!
Will come back.

one word- amazing.
stayed one night there due to blunders booking flights and one of the best travel experiences i have had.
arrived quite late in the evening and staff were extremely friendly and helpful in carrying bags up for me (without even having me ask), organised an airport shuttle for me after i had difficulties with my original shuttle, and even organised a meal for me (at 11pm!).
the room was clean, neat and well above what i expected for a hostel. i booked an 8 bed dorm, got given a 5 bed dorm (shared with only 2 others) and got to sleep in the double bed. the bathroom while small, was an ensuite, had a working toilet, shower, sink and hairdryer, and was also clean and neat.
the wifi connection was strong, given the password no troubles at all. also 2 computers and a printer available.
there was also rooftop access if you wished.
slept with the windows open and had no trouble with noise at all.

First of all, .... the staff of the hotel are very friendly guys with humor who are allways into a nice conversation with everyone ... It's a simple formula: you have a small and clean room, a shared bathroom and a shared toilet ... breakfast in the morning till 10u30 which is nice when you want to sleep longer. The street is not very noisy for Istanbul .... It's a very cental location: touristic, historical centre is nearby and you have a tramline from walking distace towards all the other interesting areas of Istanbul, f.i. to Taksim square and Istiklal street where you can shop and go out. The reception is guarded 24 hours a day ... good value for not that much money ...
Thanx Mehmed, Cengiz and John ....
greetings from Belgium,
David and Christophe

My wıfe and I stayed at the Second Home Hostel for 5 nıghts İn late Aprıl and looked forward to spendıng an addİtıonal 2 days there begınnıng of June 2012. The staff ıs very frıendly and helpful especıally Gengıs and Mehmet and they all speak Englısh. The hostel ıs perfectly located to vısıt all the attractıons ın Sultanahmet and ıs also very close to Beyoglu the newer section of Istanbul. There are many excellent restaurants nearby and the Egyptıon or Spıce Bazaar and Grand Bazaar are wıthın walkıng dıstance. My wife and İ were totally satısfıed.

Thanks to Turkish Airlines forcing me to stop over in Istanbul on my way from Bangkok to Berlin, this was my second visit to the city straddling Europe and Asia and I selected Second Home for my rather short stay this time (a short "grrr" directed sideways at TK for forcing me to take the morning flight).

Obviously, this is a very good choice due to the pleasant proprietors. After locating the hostel with the help of some friendly natives - it really is located very close to the tram line - I really needed some food and they helped me place an order that was brought in from a nearby restaurant. We exchanged some pleasant conversation until my early departure the next morning and my inability to sleep on moving objects persuaded me to call it a night.

You already know what the dorm looks like from the pictures, now imagine it filled with people, some snoring away already (there always has to be one snorer, right? Do they pick up a number before checking in or what? One time in Philly it got so bad, I shook one awake, or at least it changed his mode from "full blast snore" to "what the...? Resume snoring once earthquake has subsided") and with luggage all around in the dark while you have no idea where the light switches are and there is a half eaten pretzel on your bed that is hard to assign to a specific owner...

You will likely not have a queue if you, like me, get up around 5AM but there is only one shower and toilet room downstairs, so do keep this in mind.

Even with the "dorm adventure", I still rate this as a good stay based on the friendly atmosphere and the the location (but as Turkish switched their * Alliance mileage eligibility class on me just weeks after I had made my booking, I doubt there will be a return anytime soon).

Had booked for 3 nights on the mixed dorm but only stayed for 1. There was mould all over the ceiling and walls and the carpet was wet. When I told the staff that I wasn't staying the remainder of my booking due to the mould they said they would fix it! I assume they just meant they would try to mask the smell because only major structural work could fix the damp problem. Private rooms may be worth staying but book elsewhere for a dorm.
