“Not bad but not good”
Reviewed 23 May 2014

Although freshly painted and clean there were a number of things we didn't like. The double mattress in our room was dreadful - the springs had collapsed on one side, which meant there was a flat surface for one of us and a slope for the other. Fortunately there was another bed in the room with a decent single mattress on it so I slept on that. To give then their due, someone came up to inspect when we complained, but instead of the new mattress that was needed either the one we had was turned over, or it was replaced by one that was only slightly better. The extra bed in the room although we needed it, made it extremely cramped. There was only one chair in the bedroom. There was no lounge. There were 4 sofas in reception, and although you could sit in the breakfast room in the evening the lights were switched off after 10.00pm on the night we looked for somewhere to sit. The breakfast room was nice. Situated at the top of the hotel you had a panoramic view of the coast. The breakfast was ok. The location was alright, but the hotel is at the bottom of the steep hill leading to the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia etc. You can find hotels that are much closer than the 25 min walk required. Situated near the fish market, there are a number of restaurants close by making eating out easy which was good. There was an outdoor area which might have been nice but it was closed. We had the impression the hotel is in a stage of transition and hasn't quite got there yet, not very good considering Best Western is a major hotel chain.

I had a one night stop over in Istanbul, so like I have done previously I always look to book different hotels every time I take the stop over. 2 weeks ago I stayed at Faros, Sultan Ahmet and this time I stayed at Best Western Amber.

All I can say is that I can't really understand the reasoning for the higher ranking. Everything is OK about the hotel but nothing is exceptional. When I turned up at the hotel and was taken to my room, There were towels in the corridors from room service doing the cleaning and my room was still being prepared (unbeknownst to reception), so I had to wait 5 mins.

The room itself, is very compact but was tidy. The decor was OK and the bathroom was of an acceptable standard. The bathroom accessories were very good, including both dental and shaving kits. The bed was comfortable and the room had artificial flowers laid on the bed with a welcome leaflet next to it. I was given a "sea view" room n the highest floor and could see some of the see though the crumbling houses which obscure the view!

The staff were also very friendly and the receptionist was shocked at how low a price I received and said that my rate should be at at least 3 times higher. So even though its good to know I got a really good deal, all I can say is that the location is a deal breaker.

The steep hill up to the main sites is a big put off and I couldn't see many families wanting to do this journey over a seven day stay. Also as its not really that close to the metro stops, its not really that convenient for travelling around Istanbul.

You will also notice that I have omitted the roof top restaurant (Breakfast was free but it opens at 7am and I needed to leave by 6.30am)

All in all this would be one to avoid as far as I am concerned.

Room Tip: Even with a good price, this maybe one to void!

This is a really nice friendly compact hotel. The staff all go out of their way to help guests, and can cope with visitors in a wide range of languages.
The rooms are on the small side, but perfectly adequate and the breakfast area on the roof affords great views over the old city. The surrounding area is attractive, but lacks the variety of bars and restaurants you'd find nearer to the town centre. A short, but steep climb up the hill takes you to the Grand Bazaar and the excellent tram service.

Room Tip: Even rooms at the front of the hotel overlooking the busy street appear to be quiet

We stayed a few days as holiday at March, with my mother and wife.i
It was a beautiful oppurtinity because an employee from the hotel spoke our own language (Miss Neda). It was a suprise that miss Neda Shahsevan speaks 5 different languages.
At least i want to tell that the service of the hotel was very nice and we look forward to stay at the hotel once more.

Me and my husband stayed in Amber Hotel for three nights. We were picked up from the Ataturk Airport and the service was good. The room (204) was spacious and cosy. The beds were good to sleep in. There is a mosque nearby, which can be loud. The hotel is located on a busy street and car noises are quite disturbing, if your hotel window is on that side.
The streets towards bazar were steep and it took us 15 min to walk there.
The breakfast was filling and the view from the breakfast room was towards the sea.
In the hotel there was a service, that you can get coffee 24/7. Every day we got two free water bottles.
The staff was frendly and polite.

Room Tip: Room that is not to the big street.

Though the rooms were small, the hospitality and the location made up for it. Located in Kumkapi, right beside over 100 seafood restaurants, Amber is the best bet to explore the old city of Istanbul. All the major tourist attractions, including the Santa Sophia and the Grand Bazar ar a short walking distance away. The breakfast at the hotel is very good, and the view from the roof restaurant amazing. A special mention for Yakoub, his humor was very interesting. Strongly recommend Best Western Amber.

Room Tip: Request for a bigger room if you want some space to move around.
