I have stayed for 2 nights at this hotel. It is well located - 2 minutes walk to Blue Mosques. It has a certain charm, a nice terrace, decent breakfast and friendly staff, BUT the furniture is old and quite dirty, my room was very small and had a bad smell, the towels were old and overused. I honestly do not understand how it has received so many good reviews! I have chosen the hotel based on the scoring on TripAdvisor, but I do not cope with the reviewers who have appreciated the location so much!

Hotel Sphendon is close to all of the major sights in the Sultanahmet area, but it is situated on a quiet street. Istanbul as a whole is noisy city; no hotel is noise free! The calls to prayer are wonderful and a part of the Istanbul experience. Our room was a perfect place to collapse after a long day of sightseeing. The hotel also has a rooftop terrace with views of the Marmara Sea and the Blue Mosque, but best part of the hotel was the garden patio. We spent many a relaxing morning enjoying our tea in this beautiful garden. The breakfast buffet is excellent -- great cheeses, fruits, and other Turkish standards. We loved our stay here and hope to be back.

Note: If you stay a certain number of nights, Hotel Sphendon provides transportation to the airport.

Excellent location close to
main attractions, charming, friendly staff. However, street noise and little privacy do to thin walls and windows. Avoid rooms facing the front. If you need a room to stay close to attractions go for it, for a romantic get away better no.

This small, apparently family-run hotel is the perfect place to make you feel at home in a city that can be bewildering to the average Western tourist. The service is unfailingly friendly and helpful (it beats me how they sustain a 24-hour reception on their small staff, but they do), and the rooms are impeccable. I had a beautifully quiet room facing the charming little back garden; I don't know whether the front rooms might be noisy, but the air conditioning is efficient, and the street is not that busy, so that might not be a problem. The early-morning Call to Prayer is a bit of a shock at first, but you get used to even that.
The breakfast, though slightly unfamiiar to Western tastes, is generous and inventive -- I stayed here for nine days, and there was at least one new dish every day. I was fortunate, too, to stay here in fruit season, so there was very good fresh fruit every morning, to be enjoyed in the above-mentioned little garden, eyed by a little company of cats.
Other reviewers have mentioned the location, minutes away from the Blue Mosque and other attractions. But walk in the other direction (ask at reception) to the cheerful Akbyik Sokak, where there is an infinite variety of affordable restaurants.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back are quiet and cool.

The Sphendon is in a perfect location for all the sights in Sultanamet, the old city of Istanbul, walking distance from the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofia and the Topkapi Palace, but in a quiet area. The neighborhood is full of atmospheric restaurants and cafés, the hotel has a roof terrace with great views of the Marmara Sea and the Blue Mosque, as well as a nice back garden. Rooms are well-equipped and do not feel cramped although they are quite small - as is the case with most hotels in this part of the city where buildings are generally quite small. The breakfast buffet is excellent, with a good choice of Turkish breakfast fare. Staff is very friendly and polite, cleaning standard can't be faulted. Altogether the perfect base for exploring fabulous Istanbul. We will be back!!

N.B. The only problem with this hotel is finding it, as the small street it is in does not appear on most maps, and even taxi drivers and locals have trouble locating it. I would suggest that the hotel puts directions in the booking confirmation e-mail.

This hotel was perfect for our first time in Istanbul! From the minute we arrived, everything was perfect. The rooms are unique and very nicely decorated, it feels more like a small B&B than a hotel as listed. There is a lovely sitting area in the entrance, free wifi through out the entire hotel, including the rooms, even a little fridge in your room! We had breakfast every morning out on their outside terrace, and wine at sunset on the rooftop deck. The breakfast is really generous with different selections every day,,,great coffee too! The staff were so helpful and sweet, they really made us feel at home. The hotel is in a great location, right below the Blue Mosque, and close by some great local, non touristy restaurants, with great food and prices! We had such a great stay, I would highly recommend this wonderful hotel!

Room Tip: all rooms seem the same, some have two twins, some have a double. You do have to climb the stairs to...

Clean, comfortable, OK-sized rooms, a bit quirky, but what really makes this place are the incredibly friendly and helpful young staff. Lovely decked back garden for their excellent breakfast buffet too. Central location for Sultanahmet sites. We really enjoyed our stay
