“Terrible hotel in the heart of Istanbul”
Reviewed 5 September 2013

Horrible management, incompetent staff, dirty rooms, broken toilet, dirty laundry, terrible breakfast and the intolerance of the guests. As far as Istanbul was perfect, so do not want to go back to the hotel in the evening.

Room Tip: Don`t book rooms in cheap hotels

The only positive about this place is its outstanding location. Women must avoid it regardless. The owner of this place Ahmad initially appeared to be quite friendly. There were some initial hiccups which were addressed after I took a strong stance. Specifically, the hotel advertises the availability of Wi-Fi connection in the rooms. I was given a room at the 5 th floor and the room did not have a Wi-Fi. There is no telephone in the room and no elevator either. Besides, the lobby where the Wi-Fi worked had no AC. The bathroom door in my room wont close-so the floor would be flooded whenever I took bath. The problems were not attended to after several complaints. Only when I threatened a bad review, I was shifted to another room.

The new room was in the 3rd floor & Wi-Fi connection worked inside. Bathroom door could also be closed. But, during my first bath, I was shocked by the owner opening the bathroom door and entering-thats right, I was still in the showers. He did not knock the bathroom door. Apparently, he knocked at my room door, which I probably couldnt hear since my bathdoor was closed and I was under the shower. Apparently, there was water on the floor of the room which seeped outside. But that still does not explain why he entered the bath without knocking. Lights were on in my room, the key was on the desk, all pointing to the fact that I was inside. Besides he knew that a woman was living in the room.

What shocked me even more was that he did not instantaneously apologise, but vociferously argued with me that he did not do anything wrong.

I didnt feel safe in the hotel after this experience - thankfully it was my last day and I was glad to be out the next morning.

Just stay out of this property!

Room Tip: Stay on lower floors - there is no telephone in the room and no elevator either

The owner of this hotel deserves five stars: he is kind, helpful and always ready to answer your questions. The rooms, though, are not great despite their excellent location. The price is a bit high for the quality but I imagine you are paying for location (all the sights are within walking distance). We stayed in the second Ast hotel (closer to the Grand Bazaar) which has an elevator (the first one does not). Our room was an OK size with a large shower stall that contained the toilet, sink and shower head (no where to place it, though, so you have to hold it). The rooms are not properly vented for the showers so the ceiling (which should have tiles above the shower) is mouldy and started to smell musty after a few days of showering. No room cleaning over the five days we were there, which is OK, although one day would have been nice to have a cleaning. Beds are quite hard (which some like but my back doesn't). Breakfast is at the first hotel (yes you have to walk, no its not a big deal), up on the roof where you have a spectacular view of the city. The food is simple, traditional turkish but quite good (cucumber, tomato, olives, bread, hardboiled egg, jam, tea). We enjoyed our mornings.

All in all, you can probably get a better deal elsewhere but we though it was fine so long as you know to expect a bit of shabbyness and mustiness in the rooms. We were OK and you will be too!

I made a reservation for this hotel and they moved us at an other bulding , i tell it bulding becouse i can't name it hotel! No breakfast, no tv, no cleaning the room at all in 4 days, the pillow were dirty and aftere we told them nobody botherd to change them! This second location is between some shoe factories and the noise late in the night and early in the morning is awful!!! Evrething you say to them, they will answer only OK! OK ! But nothing! Take care they will take your money from your credit card before you get there , so if you whant to leave they have your money and it's not refundable !!!!! Do not book here! I have visited other cities , stayed at other hotels ? this is far from the truth and the worst 'hotel' i ever stayed in! Even they say that they have, they dont have parking places , the parking is on the street in front of other houses, and they are not fiendly at all, they hit my car with the leg, bent the licese number, and they spilled yogurt on it!

Sorry, folks, this is definately not the hotel you want to stay while in Istanbul. Yes, it is a budget hotel and I had expectations in line with price paid. However, cleanless of this place should score below 0, on a negative scale. All over hotel you can feel strong distinctive BAD smell, smell of cats is present literally everywhere. Without being fussy travelers, we still could not manage to sleep in there. Bad smell, dustry, dirty and missing bed linen (hairs and stains of blood). uhhhh feel sorry for anyone who will need to stay in this hotel. Breakfast is very poor and roof terrace isn't very clean as well
Said that, staff members are welcoming and very helpfull 9reason for 2 stars). We have been transferred to another place on the first day as no chance we could stay in our room. New room wasn't as bad, still dirty feel to it but at least no smell and cats hanging around. New place had no WI- FI available and we had to walk to have breakfast every morning to another hotel which was a bit annoying.

Final- veridict- I was unfortunate enough to stay in dirty, cats infested B and B's in other coutries but for a fraction of price I paid for AST. Definately can find another, nice and decent B and B for the similar price or a bit extra...Only good things is staff and location

Room Tip: Another room in another hotel

I have spent 4 days in this hotel and i have to say that it was the best time i have ever experienced in IST. The location is very nice everyone here says its dodgy etc but its not it is in the middle of the old district in sultanahmet and if someone complains about the hotel surroundings doesnt know what he is talking about there are 3 other hotels aproximatelly 50 meters away from this one and they are all luxurious 4 star hotels so you cannot say that the neighborhood is dodgy. 20 meters form the hotel itself is a neet restaturant serving various turkish quisine. The main atractions such as hypodrome, Hagia sophia, Blue mosque are in walking distance which you never really get in IST for such a price, by walking distance i mean roughly 15 minutes maximum. Grand bazaar is 25 minutes again walking distance you dont even need to use taxis etc. which is rare in istanbul. Also one of the atractions is the Yeribatan(palace cistern) which is one of the most amazing sights in Istanbul. The hotel itself serves breakfast included it has everything what you need for the start of the day that you wil spend exploring IST. It is served on a terrace on the top of the hotel with an amazing site. The hotel staff is amazing always helpfull never leaves you hanging or in doubts they are very forth coming. The owner Ahmed and Reis are amazing they speak both english and Reis speaks russian, french, spanish and understands german. The staff made our stay an amazing experience and the location and the sights are the best you will ever experience. I can only recommend this hotel for that price it is rare to find a hotel like this . People are very friendly always eager to help even if the do not speak your language doesnt mattter they try to help always and if you really are considering to go there this is the best budget hotel for it. Do not hesitate contact me and i can contact the owner or just simply book the hotel You will not be dissapointed. And if you are still in doubt write me your questions under daniel.martinek@gmail.com i will answer all your questions. And if you go there tell hello to the hotel staff in my name. If you ask me if i would go to IST once more where would i go it will be definitelly the AST hotel .

I stayed in this hotel for 4 days and the overall experience has been good.

The staff are very helpful and friendly, the location is perfectly near all the Sultanahmet attractions, bathrooms and certain parts of the hotel have been recently restored, breakfast is served on a rooftop terrace from which you can enjoy an amazing view. And it is cheap.

This said, there are some drawbacks like the old and a bit yucky furniture, humidity patches on certain walls and it is true that rooms get clean only once you leave. However, in my opinion, these are all issues that as a traveller you are ready to cope with for a cheap price (I have seen much worse!)

So don't stay here if you are a clean freak or you would like to find the same standards of living that you have in your home country. Four and five star hotels in Istanbul can all grant you that.
