Since I was traveling with AmaWaterways, they organized the Bosphorus cruise and limited it to just those traveling with our group. Which meant lots of room, good service, ability to move around, get great pictures, sip a glass of wine and actually step off the boat several times. The homes and other buildings along the shoreline are very definitely upscale and the weather was glorious, although quite warm for some. I would definitely recommend that anyone visiting Istanbul for the first time get out on the water in order to get a different perspective on this amazing city.

Once you are visiting Istanbul, it's nice to take a boat tour thru the Bosphorus. The city is full of historical places, and I recommend at least 4 days there.

Those tours usually go around the city, passing by the Galata Bridge, Maiden's Tower and the Bosphorus Bridge (conection between Europe and Asia).

I highly recommend that you take one of the many ferries that constantly cross the Bosphorus. You can mix with the locals and see the city from both Asia and Europe. The crossing gives you a great view of old city and the boat action on the busy Bosphorus is worth the trip all by itself. Also, there is excellent shopping on the Asian side within easy walking distance of the ferry terminal.

There are many tourist cruises that will show you the many sites of the cites.... these are worth it as well.

The waterway has lots of traffic from small boats to large freighters and cruise ships. It is fund to walk along the waterway and see the traffic. It is very safe and there are lots of locals and tourists taking ferries and sightseeing ships. I recommend the government ferry which has a ferry that runs a 3-4 hour trip up the Bosporus and back. It is very affordable, safe and the trip allows a lot of interesting sights, including old fortresses, castles, small villages and gorgeous old villas.

In Istanbul along the waterway there are a lot of restaurants serving fresh seafood.

From our July trip to Istanbul this one would be placed as number one on my list and I highly recommended to anyone. Sailing between Europe and Asia while enjoying all the beautiful sites with the explanations of a guide, and a taste of the traditional cup of tea. Thumbs up!
