Cruise down Bosphorus Strait for about 45mins. It's another way to see Istanbul, both the Europe and Asia side of Istanbul. It can get pretty windy while cruising.

The cheapest way to experience this is to take the ordinary ferry from Eminonu - e.g. to Kadikoy. It costs you 3 lira (less with an Instanbulkart / Akbil). Spend a few hours wandering around Kadikoy. where no one will try to sell you anything on the street but it has nice pedestrian streets and an antiques road to browse in.

You still get the views of the old city from the water but at a fraction of the cost.

We took the all day tour which gets you almost to the Black Sea and in sight of the new bridge being built over the Bosphorus. There's a lot of time of lunch at the far end, so take 45 minutes or so and walk up the hill to the castle. Great views.

Few cities have grand waterways. New York City and maybe London come to mind. Istanbul spreads for miles and miles on either side of the Bosphorus Strait into Asia and Europe. You can cross it by ferry or pass under it on the Marmaray subway (new 10/2013 - no photos allowed). All views are great but the view from the Topkapi palace are the most striking. Weather gives this waterway many different looks. Historic trade routes, military battles, and political alliances happen here because of the strait's critical geography. We did not take the Bosphorus cruise as my wife is prone to motion sickness.

There are regular boat services as well as organized tours. If possible visit some of the highlights along the route: Dolmabace Palace, Rumeli Fortress, etc. Excellent fish restaurants at the village nearest to the Black Sea
