“Stablesgate was not for us”
Reviewed 5 June 2011

Stablesgate is advertised as an "annex" to the Armada Hotel. It was actually three short blocks of uneven cobblestones in a very residential area. The Studio had no view, except for someone's laundry strung outside their second floor residence. Our studio was on the second floor and unfortunately I fell down some stairs the first night we were there. Breakfasts at the Armada were very good with fresh orange juice, fruit and many other vegetarian choices. I would not recommend Stablesgate for seniors.

Room Tip: Studio adequate for children

We stayed at Unit 1, Stablegates for 9 nights over the Turkish Grand Prix week for my husband's 50th birthday. For us, the apartment was just perfect, pretty, clean and tidy with maid service every day and a stones throw from Sultanhanet. The house is located down tiny little cobbled residential streets (you will need sensible footwear, I would not suggest high heels) and the local residents showed us nothing but kindness and courtesy. The view from the little roof top terrace is wonderful and we spent many a happy hour watching the ships pass through the Bosphorous.

Buffet breakfast in the hotel restaurant was of good quality with everything that one could need, all be it a bit repetitive, and with excellent views on both sides on either the Blue Mosque or the Bosphorous.

You are about 10 minutes walk to the tramline to take you to all main attractions in Istanbul and what a lot there is to see too. A highly recommended holiday.

Thank you Stablegates.
Shelly Jones

We stayed at Studio 1 which for just the 2 of us was great, we had a bedroom upstairs, and downstairs were 3 sofas which doubled up as beds for when a family stayed, so that was our lounge, The lounge was very Turkish, with lots of cushions, furnishings and rugs. The heating was very efficient, it was really cold and rainy when we stayed, so we were cosy. It was a minute to the hotel for breakfast, very nice, looked forward to the pizza like omelette each morning.
The only thing that was wrong was the smell of bad drains in the apartment, the porter niticed it when we arrived and sent a cleaner round who just sprayed something round the bathroom. As we were in the oldest part of Istanbul, and it rained a lot when we were there, perhaps it was inevitable,

Stayed at the main house and enjoyed it tremendously. Terrace on top has magnificent views of the city and sea. The house was clean and staff came everyday to make the beds and clean the bathrooms. Plus you had access to breakfast at the Armada hotel. There are a number of great restaurants just a block in each direction, Griliti and Ahirkapi Balikcisi, one expensive but excellent food and the other a local haunt with great prices and amazing food too. The house is walking distance from all the main sites. Highly recommend it! Only drawback is that the house does not have access to WiFi. You have to go to the Armada hotel lobby to access the WiFi.

Would highly recommend this for anyone visiting Istanbul. It's not a concept I have come across before - you get your own studio apartment with bedroom/living space, kitchen and bathroom but then you get to have breakfast at a hotel and use of their services. We stayed in Studio 2. In case you are looking at the pictures on the website and think the bed looks a bit small (we did!) it's actually fine! The studio is beautifully decorated and furnished, with lovely handpainted flowers on all the cupboards and doors. It feels like a proper home away from home, with loads of (english language) books. There's no view to speak of from Studio 2 but from the roof terrace (shared between the studios) you get fabulous views across the Bosphorus in one direction and to the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia in the other.

The Hotel Armada is a thirty second walk round the corner from the apartment building. The breakfast there is included in the price of the apartment. It is served in a top floor room with fabulous views as per the apartment roof terrace (we saw dolphins several mornings while eating). Breakfast is a huge selection of cereals, cooked items, fruit, yogurt etc including a whole honeycomb that you can break pieces off.
The guest services at the hotel were also very helpful in finding us information such as ferry timetables and where to buy football match tickets.

The apartment/hotel are conveniently located for the main sights of Sultanahmet.
