After a conference in Assos, Turkey, I had one night to spend in Istanbul. Some Turkish friends at the conference suggest I stay near the Galata Tower rather than (as most tourists do) the Sultanahmet area. Boy, was that a great suggestion. The Beyoglu area consist of narrow streets on a hill filled with interesting shops. Istiklal Street in the evening simply is the place to be--such a festive, enjoyable scene. The hotel is on a small street which forks off of Istiklal. I walked from the hotel to Taksim Square, where there was an outdoor concert. I had dinner at a place recommended by the hotel management called the "Flower Bazaar" (highly recommended). The next morning I walked to Sultanahmet (45 min walk across the Galata Bridge). By the way, my room was ridiculously spacious, every clean, and inexpensive. I would certainly return here if I am fortunate enough to be able to visit Istanbul again.
