This cosy little hotel is tucked away in a quiet street within very short walking distance of major attractions in Sultanahmed. The staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome and help with anything you need. Its heritage as a perfumery makes it an interesting place in itself. The lovely staff even gave me a little present when I left. I will stay here again when I return to Istanbul.

The room we stayed in was lovely. As they refurbished it recently, the hotel is clean and the staff is very friendly with a good english ! They guide us to nice local turkish restaurants and to lovely places to visit. As the hotel is closed to the seaside, you can go by walk.
We enjoyed our stay in Istanbul and this hotel is definitely a good place to sleep !!

we had booked in another hotel in sultanahmet istanbul. however they were full once we get there, and we found Esans Hotel by chance. it is much more beautiful hotel.it is a run family hotel. . I was very suprised with their location. like opposite of topkapi museum. important cultural signs are very near walking. rooms are decodated very elegantly.
Very helpful friendly staff. . my husband needed a pc to go into internet. hotel management let us use their computer. they also guide us very local nice restaurants and hammam turkish. so we are very happy since hotel management suggests local and friendly places to visit. most important we had silent stay. all perfect.

The hotel has very good reviews both on here and on booking.com. That's why my friend and I decided to book a room there. Alas, we were very disappointed.

While located conveniently in the center of old Istanbul, the quality of the hotel itself leaves much more to be desired. There was nothing majorly disturbing about it but there were so many little things that just made our stay quite an exhausting one.

The staff don't speak good enough English to hold any sort of intelligent discussion. For example, when booking we exchanged emails and received a confirmation that we would get a room on the 3rd floor. When we arrived, we got a 2nd-floor room and all we got in response to showing a print-out of the email correspondence was "sorry, it's booked".

Another issue with this hotel is that it has wooden floors that don't muffle any sound. In fact, they make every step sound like thunderstorm. So, if you have inconsiderate neighbors upstairs, this turns into a huge problem, which was our case. I have no idea what they were doing but it was unbearable. I went to talk to them and they started screaming at me. We mentioned the problem of noisy neighbors to the person at the reception but the hotel was unwilling to do anything about it. They pretended not to understand the issue and just shrugged it off. Again, this brings me to the matter of poor English language skills. Perhaps it's just a strategy to deal with conflict, I don't know. The outcome was that our problem wasn't solved.

The rooms themselves were nice. The bed was comfy; the linens clean and fresh. However, when we moved in, there was a lot of hair in the sink drain. After the first night the cleaning lady took two towels and never replaced them so we had to call the reception and ask them to bring them. We also discovered that the cleaning lady threw out all our special airport plastic bags for liquids that were stacked nicely next to our colognes. At the same time, the trash cans weren't emptied.

The breakfast was very poor. I travel very often and usually know what to expect for the money I am paying. There was some cheese, some bread, some cold cuts, a few bowls of canned olives and omelette. There was no coffee, only an instant coffee-like drink. The breakfast table just looked depressing. We didn't care to have breakfast at the hotel the next two mornings, especially since you can have a nice morning meal for, like, 5 euros in any of the surrounding cafes.

Finally, on the day we were checking out we saw the tiny lobby of the hotel packed with locals waiting for something. Turned out the hotel was a gathering point for owner's friends or relatives to go to an engagement ceremony. Now, is that a way to run a hotel?! If it were a B&B or a hostel - go ahead. But it's a HOTEL, for crying out loud!

Overall, the hotel has potential. If you're lucky you will have a nice time. However, in case you don't get lucky, you'll regret it. I am just not sure it's worth the risk.

Thank you for your feedback. We attach the highest importance to our guests’ reviews and satisfaction, however we would like to clarify some points as below:

Tourism is a sector which deals with different people from different cultures with different level of expectations from all around the world. We highly try our best to ensure all of our guests’ stay as pleasant and comfortable.

We work as 3 shifts in the reception. As master reception, I lived in abroad many years. My English is enough for all kind of intelligent discussion including politics, cultural exchange...Our other receptions can also speak Russian, Italian and English as well. Probably you mean our supportive staff (cleaning lady or bellboy) has lower grade English which is normal and they are taking English courses to improve as well.

We have renovated 100years old mansion. We have installed polyurethane material as insulation into walls, floors and ceiling of our wooden building. If our guest is very sensitive to noise and if our night reception is clearly informed about the issue, he is well trained to handle the case by proper intervention including warning other noisy guests in a polite way. As you may see in other reviews, our hotel street is very quiet and our guests have silent and peacefull rest during their stay.

Cleanliness is our most important principle. Our rooms are cleaned everyday with great care with changing towels and emtying trash. If cleaning lady threw your plastic bags unintentionally and if you had informed us, we would definitely provide you new ones immediately. Unfortunately, we were not informed about the issue by our guest to handle it.

We have open buffet breakfast which has 38 different types including fruit jams, honey, butter, musli, fresh fruits,yogurt...etc. Especially home made pastries, crepe, pancakes and hot plates are highly preferred by our guests. We serve fresh orange juice during breakfast also as well as fruit teas, Turkish tea and Coffees..etc. It is definitely much richer and tasty breakfast comparing to surrounding touristic cafes and restaurants as seen in other guests' feedbacks.

The first owner of our 100years old renovated mansion was a perfume maker. So we named our Hotel as Esans on his honour. (Essence) His grandchild's daughter is still living in the area. She dreamed of having an engagement ceromony for herself in her grand granddady's former house.Based on our mission of preserving own ethnical cultural dynamics, we support such local cultural events. They are not our relatives or family. It is a complimentary respect for the history.

Most of our hotel guests were very interested and camcorded this local ceremony. They were very happy to feel and join local ethnical natural event. If any of our guest had informed their disturbance,we would immediately intervene the event. Time by time, we also support ethnical events i.e. etnical live music events, karagoz hacivat shadow meddah...etc in our Hotel to be able to reflect our unique cultural dynamics to our guests. We encourage preserving our own distinctive ethnics, esthetics and cultural dynamics rather than only trade and commercial activities in Turkey.

Finally, we apologise for this disappointment. Please be sure; that we have already improved the necessary points accordingly.

Esans hotel is a very nice and beautiful hotel. rooms are very oriental decorated, staff is very kind and helpful. They can understand and speak english well. our room was clean and very nice. and it was cleaned every day. Esans hotel is a new and relaxed hotel.
That was my second trip in istanbul, and my girlfriends first. we choose this hotel because of its location and beautiful rooms. And the location in actually very near all the historical places of sultanahmed. we colund visit every place by walk. Normally the photos on web page are always a little "corrected" and your room will be not the same as the photos shown on site. But i think some of the photos on site was the photos of our room. And we stayed on a regular double room. My girlfriend really enjoyed the hotel and trip. She loved the historical fragrances selling at the hotel too. everything was excellent. The weather was rainy at our trip so we didnt enjoyed the roof at esans hotel. I am sure that haveing breakfast on the roof will be very nice. I hope we will visit the hotel again in summer.
I fully recommend this hotel to all people who is going to visit istanbul and sultanahmed.
