We enjoyed our stay!

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 16 Jun 2011
We really enjoyed our stay at the Marmara Taksim. The service provided by the employees is wonderful and the hotel is perfectly located in the city centre.
The view from the restaurant is really nice, when having our breakfast.
We would appreciate a more design and modern decoration.
Date of stay: June 2011
Room Tip: Nice view of Taksim Square from room 707

Quite an uneventfull stay at the Marmara Taksim in Istanbul. So here goes:

1. The website on which we chose to stay at this hotel was so cool and blissful, that it totally distorted our actual stay when we got there.

2. The website failed to mention that the hotel was under renovation, but while its only the lobby area, we did not mind too much.

3. Very aggressive staff at reception though the welcome was OK.

Location wise, the hotel is spot on and ideal. Right on the square.

Food: very limited and the top floor restaurant was always nearly empty when we ate there. Kind of a shame since the views are amazing. Food quality was not up to par.

Rooms: OK, but really expensive for what they are and we had to change rooms.

Overall: An OK stay but value for money is questionable. Its a really nice hotel and I eally hope they get their act together by offering better value. Just because of location, doesn't mean you charge the rates we had. Flexibility would have been nicer as well. As a guest, the least you would expect was to get a room change for free concidering the quality.

Room tip: The higher and a club floor

The Marama Taksim is a modern, well-run hotel just off Taksim Square in a lively and convenient part of Istanbul. It is a couple of rather hilly miles from the famous sites of the Old City, but these are pretty accessible via public transportation (which is a little tricky to navigate, but well worth figuring out). Rooms on the back of the hotel (facing the Bosporus) are very quiet, those toward the square a little less so. Taksim Square can be a bit of a scene a night, and there can be plenty of traffic even at midnight. The hotel sits on a hill, so the views even from the lower floors are good. Those from the restaurant on the top floor are spectacular. The staff is very professional and friendly, the WiFi works well, and the business center is open 24 hours. All the beds have just been replaced, and they are very comfortable. The only peculiarity I noticed is that the complimentary toiletries don't include hair conditioner -- first time I've seen that.

As others have mentioned it is in an excellent central position. The entrance is a mess at the moment whilst they are undergoing major building works, but this looks likely to be finished soon.

Nothing wrong with the hotel and the staff were very friendly, but we would say it is more 4 star than 5 star. 5 star raises expectations much higher.

The good points:-
Excellent Position
Friendly staff
Fine views from many rooms
Modern rooms

The so so points
*some of these may be minor, but it is advertised as a 5 star hotel .

The bedrooms are not very large

The bathrooms have a small bath with a shower in it. I would have expected a separate shower cucbicle as well as a bath for a 5 star hotel

The top floor bar / restaurant does not have an outside area (their sister hotel, the 4 star Marmara Pera downtown has a fantastic roof top bar and small pool) It does however have fantastic views.

The drink prices in the rooms are far too expensive, they should bring them down and they would make far more sales. Over £5 for a small coca cola ?

The pool is not heated, I only saw one person in it. For a one off price of about £5000 and £4000 yearly electricity costs they could heat this pool to about 25C to 28C easily from May to October. It would be well worth doing.

The pool area also needs to either have a small bar area, or menus with drink and snack prices. The staff by the pool and spa area were helpful, but the area did not feel special enough.

They had quite a few conferences when we were there, with about 100 people in suits all standing by the swimming pool area during a break chatting and have a cigarette.

Overall, we had a great stay in Istanbul, we would have been happier at the same price (or a bit less) if the hotel was advertised as 4 star

I used Marmara Hotel twice on a single trip. While going to Turkey for a 15 day cross country tour and while coming back from Turkey in the end.
The hotel public areas are phenomenally well maintained. The front desk staff ladies were just perfect. The breakfast had a large variety with good quality materials and products.
The staff was extremely attentive in the entire hotel and very well informed.
Even my smallest requests like a phone charger adapter was met with delight and excellent options for me.

All in all an excellent stay, albeit rooms are a bit small and Taksim Square is always in commotion mode which you hear in your room.
