Lovely stroll along the Bosphorus on a sunday afternoon. This is the day off for most locals so the pier is full of families, couples and people all enjoying their day off. Great way to soak up the local atmosphere. There are some very nice cheap restaurants as well nearby and also some great shopping at much cheaper prices than the more touristy areas.

Beside the more touristic areas of Istanbul Taksim Beyoğlu or old Istanbul, I highly recommend you to visit Beşiktaş which gives you a closer look at Istanbul’s middle class night life. You can drink one or two beer at the restaurants by the sea or inside the ‘Çarşı’. Most of the people around you will be university students. Prices of cafes and bars are really affordable. Fish market at the middle of ‘Çarşı’ is one of the interesting points in Beşiktaş. The worst point about it is being so small. Beşiktaş tells you more about Istanbul than Taksim. It is also very easy to go, 10 minute walk from Kabataş or five minute bus ride from Taksim. There are direct small yellow busses named ‘Dolmuş’ from Taksim to Beşiktaş.

Historically Besiktas was the sailing point of the Ottoman Naval forces (hence the statue of Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha)

Now it is the home of the one of the 3 Giants of Turkish football, Besiktas JK. It is a neighborhood still intact, largely because of the sense created by and for the football team, I would say. Inside Beşiktaş çarşı (market) there are many good bars and cafes ("kaset" is a must go). Çarşı is also the name of the world famous fan group Beşiktaş JK.
