We loved the attitude, location, comfy beds, clean spaces, modern design, breakfast lady, curteous staff, options, black out curtains, little Turkish delights that greeted us in our room, proximity to the shore, atmosphere... it all contributed to us loving Portus and loving this wonderful city. Thanks!

My fiancé and I stayed at Portus House for 6 nights in May and we loved it. The location of he hotel is very excellent. It is easily to reach Galata Tower, Galata Bridge, Spice Bazar, etc.
The beds were extremely comfortable, especially at the end of long days spent walking around the city. The rooms and the hotel was lovely and everything was clean, modern and designed to make the most of the small space. Wifi was reliable and much appreciated. Owner Cigdem & Firat were very friendly and approachable. We loved Portus Hotel and would definitely stay here again!

Our choice for the Portus House followed a recommandation from a closed friend. We definitly are not disapointed about our one week stay at this hotel. The personnel, Murat and Ismael, along with the owner Cigdem made everything possible to feel us welcome to their lovely place. The location of this hotel is also an important feature for Istanbul visitors. Do not expect luxury at this place. But, you will find confortable beds, and extremely clean spaces troughout the property.

I’m infatuated with small, personal hotels. The Portus House Istanbul turned out to be exactly what I was looking for during my visit. It’s a quiet hotel in a quiet neighborhood, yet still close to all main sites that were on my itinerary. It’s run by young people who like to travel as well, thus are aware of the needs one might have. The staff is pleasant, the rooms and bathrooms are exceptionally clean, and it is close enough to walk to many sites – Istanbul Modern Museum, Galata Tower, Galata Bridge, etc. It’s a small hotel, so I guessing you should book early. We already booked again for next year. One thing – it's quite easy to find nowadays, as they have put up many signs and Portus has earned a well deserved reputation in this already progressive area...

This fantastic little hotel close to the Karakoy tramvay terminal is quiet, clean, and nicely furnished. My wife and I shared a "family room" with her sister and husband. It was spacious, the beds were great, and it included a private bathroom. The friendly and helpful staff will serve you a light breakfast of bread, cheese, jelly, and other tasty bits which varies from day to day. The hotel is close to some nice restaurants and kabap houses. Walk along the Bosporus and check out the fishermen on your way to the Karakoy bridge. Hop on the tramvay for a cheap (2TL) trip to the typical tourist destinations like the Aya Sofia and the Blue Mosque or take a ferry to the Princes Islands. Considering taking the tramvay to Sultanahmet and walking back. Its a downhill walk and will give you a chance to see a little more of the area. A grocery store across the street from hotel is a good place to pick up water or a snack of you don't feel like going out.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that includes a private bathroom.

My boyfriend and I had a very nice 3 night stay here.

Room:
We had a double room (room 3) with shared bathroom. Good beds. Not much of a view, but we saw enough views elsewhere :-). Very quiet in the nighttime. Sharing the shower and toilet with another room (only 1) didn't cause any problems. We hardly saw or neighbours, could use the shower/toilet whenever we wanted. The sink was rather small. Airconditioning was working well. Availability of Wifi depended a bit on where in the room you were :-) We got fresh towels every morning and the room and bathroom were very clean. The breakfast was excellent: Coffee/tea, bread, a nice plate with vegetables, cheese, olives, ... The staff was very friendly and helpful. We told them we were thinking about cruising the Golden Horn, and they immediately took their phone to ask about possibilities!

Location:
We had little problem finding the place, thanks to the friendly locals (who didn't speak much English). I would recommend printing a map. It is close to two tram stops (Tophane and Karakoy) and a ferry stop (Karakoy), and public transport is cheap (2 TL for tram or ferry).
The street was a bit dirty at times and if I were a girl alone, I would think it was a bit too quiet.
There is a supermarket on the opposite side of the street, which is very cheap and convenient.
Nearby are also great places to have a lunch (Namli) or something sweet (Gulluoglu). In the evening it is very nice to sit on the waterside, go to the Nargileh lane or hop on a metro to the area of Istiklal Caddesi.

Thank you for the nice stay!

My fiancé and I had an amazing 4 night stay at the Portus House Istanbul.

Room
I’ve never had a better room at a hostel and it is better than many mid-market hotels. We shared a private 2 person room – the bed was huge and comfortable, we had a dresser, a table, air con worked very well, space and hangers for hanging clothes, and had a safe. Everything was super clean, and our room was cleaned again daily. The room decor had a playful feel, with some black and white checkered wall paper and fun picture frames on the wall. Also was a nice big mirror on the wall. The iPod docking station was a convenient surprise.

Services
The coolest thing was waking up in the morning and coming downstairs where the owner - Cigdem, I believe - sorry if I forgot your name://// - was waiting for us with breakfast. After being offered coffee, we are presented with a nice large spread of fresh veggies, fresh breads, soft and hard cheeses, olives, jam and eggs. Breakfast is taken in the cozy kitchen/dining room where floor to ceiling windows provide wonderful natural lighting and usually a nice breeze.

Further, Cigdem was so nice to talk to in the mornings. We learned about the Prince’s Islands by listening to her recommend this to another guest. And best of all, when we told Cigdem that we wanted to take some private dance classes to help with creating a dance for our wedding next month and she was quick to not only recommend ContactTango nearby (where Cigdem also attends classes), but also to call them and schedule a private class for us. The team of Erdal & Eleonora at ContactTango were perfect and this whole experience makes for one of the most memorable travel experiences my fiancé and I have ever shared.

We also received new shower and hand towels delivered to our room daily and the wifi always worked.

Bathrooms were clean and well lit. We had one toilet and one shower assigned to us and another couple (4 total people) – waiting to use either was never a problem. Paper was fully stocked at the toilet and we always had hot water when we needed it. And there was a shelf at the sink to rest our things on while brushing, etc… which is a simple convenience often overlooked at hostels.

Location/Transport
PHI is just off the Galata bridge, on the opposite side of the bridge from the Old Town. A three minute walk from two different tram stops and only three tram stops from the heart of the Old Town. We arrived at Ataturk Airport late on a Friday (at 23:50), so took advantage of the 35€ airport transfer service offered by PHI. Although our flight was delayed until after 01:00, the driver was still waiting for us with a smile. By transfer, I think it took approx 25 mins from Ataturk to PHI. We took the tram/metro combination when returning to the airport and this took about an hour, with one transfer. It’s also note worthy that the hotel is clearly marked and easily recognizable from the street, where it is conveniently located opposite a large grocery market, and that the 24 hour reception makes check in and check out a breeze.

I like how another reviewer phrased the neighborhood as being in transition, but in a good way. This sums it up perfectly. While the street isn't yet sparkling with development, it was clean and more - or - less light on car or foot traffic. We didn't have any problems with noice from the street keeping us up at night or waking us in the morning. There is a very charming cafe about two blocks north, with big portions of salads, soups, sandwiches, and pastas.
