“Great hospitality”
Reviewed 7 July 2012

Oba Hotel has excellent location in front of picturesque Sokollu Mehmed Pasha Mosque, in the vicinity of Small Haghia Sophia and Ottoman houses district. Blue Mosque, Haghia Sophia and Hippodrome Square are also in the walking distance. Even if the sorroundings of the hotel may seem not to be nice enough at first glance (there are some ruined houses neareby), you forget it immediately when you enter the lobby. You are welcomed by the owner who is not only helpful, friendly and speeks English fluently, but also makes the familiar ambience. You feel as you were at home. While serving beverages or tea in the lobby, he gives you advices on places wortht to see in Istanbul. The staff are also very kind and helpful. Hotel is freshly renovated in a traditional style; rooms are clean, comfortable and well equipped. Breakfast is self-served in the lobby, with a good variety of freshly prepared Turkish food.
We enjoyed the atmosphere and extremely hospitality of the owners of hotel, the Ottoman design and good location. It was worth the money spent. We definitely recommend Oba Hotel as a good place to stay.

We stayed at Oba hotel for 4 nights. Oba is a smaller hotel and very nice and we like the more personal touch. Breakfast was excellent and the servers were great. Oba's location was close to the Blue Mosque etc . It's location is on the slope overlooking the Sea of Marmara and I enjoyed it because we were out of the "crush" of all the tourists sites, yet so close to them when we wanted to visit. It was about a 10 minute walk down to the sea side and the nice path along the sea front. My wife liked the small decorating touches in the room and the common areas. The owners are a hard working couple who are keen to share their knowledge of Turkey.

Room Tip: We had a top floor room. The streets and general area are very quiet.

The hotel is a little bit "off the grounds", at the hedge of Sultanhamet, next to a magnificent mosk by Sinan, in a borrough where it seems that locals still reside (a rare feeling in the historical district...). In a little side street, filled with traditionnal wooden houses [where the fishmonger still passes by once a day, selling his daily booty from the Bosphorus] Oba hotel, a rewamped XIXth C.ottoman house, is a peace harbor in the constant turmoil of the Ottoman capital. The staff is just great and the kindness of the owner/manager Ismael - the real genie of the house - certainly participated to the feeling of beeing at home that my wife and I had during our stay. Don't hesitate to ask Ismael for "off the tracks" places to visit or eat at (especially on the asian side, where he lives) you won't regret it! As to our room, it was of average size but a very romantic place, clean and sexy, full of light and decorated with care. The bed was big and VERY comfy (incl. the pillows!)... and it felt like sleeping on clouds!!! The bathroom was tiny but state of the art with a great italian shower and a window. Beside the sound insolation problem (which should be fixed if Ismael would extend his collection of carpets to the bedrooms...!) as mentionned by others the Oba is simply a wonderful place to stay when in Istambul. We have already advertised it to friends all around and plan to continue, hoping to go back again, and again, and again!!. Thanks guys and keep up the good work!

Room Tip: As the street is quite narrow, we would advice that you ask for the hightest possible room, for ligh...

Oba Hotel was a life saver!
The staff were very welcoming, helpful and informative. They sent us to the best places and helped us out a lot during our stay...
If I ever get back to Istanbul, I'll definitely stay there again!

Tulay, Ismail and the staff: Thank you for everything :)

The Oba is a lovely hotel in a traditional Ottoman house with a nice Turkish breakfast. I particularly enjoyed the changing Turkish dishes at breakfast time, and the fresh lemonade made by the hotel staff.

The room was a good size with a well stocked and very clean bathroom. The staff were very helpful and told us where we could go to experience good food and tourism. The hotel itself is fairly close to the main tourist sites, with only a 5 minute walk to the Blue mosque. The tram is a similar distance, which goes, with one change, to the airport.

I also liked the personal email we received asking us to review them here. That shows not only that they care about what we think, but also that they are confident that they are doing well. (A bad hotel would never invite criticism!)

We would have given it 5*. The only gripe we had, as was mentioned by others here (so we knew before we booked) was the creaking wood sound of people walking about above. We only stayed for two nights, so didn't want to make a fuss, but in the room we were in it was very loud. I did not want to complain at the time because we were there only a short time and couldn't be bothered to move rooms, but would suggest to the hotel that either they do some serious sound protection work, or they tell people staying on the upper floors, and perhaps put a carpet down or some other sound dampener.

Room Tip: Higher the quieter!

This is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. From the beauty of the surrounding historical area, to the simple and tasteful beauty of the hotel itself and the kindness and hospitality of our hosts, it has all been perfect. I wish to extend a big, heartfelt thank you to Ismail and Tulay for all their advice, kindness, as well as for making hotel Oba a wonderful, personalized experience.
