Owner description: Built between 1609-1616, this impressive mosque has six minarets. Why is it called "Blue Mosque?" There are two stories: the first, more common one is that the interior is covered in Blue İznik tiles. The second is: Many years ago, ancient sailors who sailed by the mosque on the Marmara Sea saw the blue colors of the sea reflected in the mosque.

“Stunning”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

We arrived early evening and sky completely dark, then in front of us, the Blue Mosque came into view. Spectacular as lit up against the black sky with no other buildings obscuring the view and stood out wonderfully. The park surrounding the mosque had a colour changing fountain and people just sitting around talking quietly. Beautiful.

“Amazing...”

Probably one of the most beautiful places I've seen in my life... When I entered, I was speechless. I didn't expect such a beautiful mosque.

“Blue Mosque”

Although all to crowded in the limited public area, it is an astonishing building, especially if you are inclined to admire the Iznik tiles, which has given the mosque its well known, but inaccurate, name - Blue mosque.

“Interesting historical sight”

Unfortunately we could only look around the courtyard area as being Friday the actual mosque was closed to visitors for general prayers. However, we attended an interesting talk in an adjacent building & learned a lot about Islam & Muslim customs.

“Don't miss it”

When Visiting Haggai Sophia make sure you visit the blue mosque. This place of worship has an area accesible to tourists. Make sure you bring socks as when you enter shows have to be removed. Women must cover their heads and all must wear modest clothing
