Owner description: The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city that provided a water filtration system for the buildings nearby. This underground chamber measures approximately 138 meters (453 ft) by 64.6 meters (212 ft) and is capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters (2,800,000 cu ft) of water. The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns.

It's one of the few things to have survived from early Byzantine/East Roman. It's an incredible feat of engineering and some of the columns are even earlier having been brought from around the empire. The medusa stones are pretty brilliant.

This one won't take you that long. My only advice is don't pay for the audio guide if you're capable of reading English.

Wow, the Basillica Cistern was amazing! We walked by one afternoon and decided to go in. So happy we did. It was fascinating!

This underground attraction would show you the basement of Istanbul. An ancient roman engineering marvelous structure its something unique to see in this historic city. The structure its impressive and its not difficult to walk around the area.

Its a nice place to stroll, specially if you go in summer, you would see the numerous columns, one next to the other, until you reach to the medusas statues. The place is quite dark but properly lighted. For me, it was a place to do and move on.

This place is unlike anything I'd ever seen! It was like walking through something out of a fantasy film, with an eerie and fascinating atmosphere. A must see for those who want to see something completely different!

This is one of the most unique sights in the city. it was a little expensive (I think 10 lira) for a something that you will spend 15 minutes in.
