Magnificent architecture!! They call it the "The Sunken Cistern". Built in 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian.

“Cool respite from the unforgiving sun!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2014

My 8 year old loved it. Especially the fishes. She and our guide were the only ones with bread...and as they walked,...a trail of big fat fishes started following them. Quite funny! The cistern had great acoustics and right at the end, the upside down Medusa heads! It was pretty cool to see it.

“Fab attraction”

We really enjoyed the Basilica Cistern and it's a good break when you are all mosqued out! It's also nice and cool and obviously shaded down there. We thought it would be really crowded because there was quite a queue but it was fine - it's quite big down there. Wear shoes with good grip as the floor was too slippery for me to get to the medusa heads.
