Owner description: The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city that provided a water filtration system for the buildings nearby. This underground chamber measures approximately 138 meters (453 ft) by 64.6 meters (212 ft) and is capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters (2,800,000 cu ft) of water. The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns.

It's the site in the near last scene of the Steve Berry book. Original city cistern is a fabulous place to listen to music and see history recycled all at the same time. Don't miss medusa !

I took Rick Steves Book Guide to follow this. Do not miss Medusa heads at the remote corner of the cistern...you'll typically see a lot of crowd, so it is hard to miss. Worth a few photos.

We also took family picture with the vendor (inside the cistern) where you get to put on robes of Turkish king, queen and prince / princess. It came out good. Fun!

This is something special to see, because actually it was not build to be seen. Because of it uniqueness I would recommend to everyone despite quite expensive entrance fee.

The value of water is the theme of many cultures throughout history. Cistern is an example of the beauty of nature. No guide is necessary, use the lonely planet book.

Of all the places that we visited during our Istanbul holiday, this was my favourite.
The sense of history is amazing, and it's hard to see how on earth this huge construction could have been achieved all those centuries ago ! This should be top of your "To visit " list !
