Owner description: The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city that provided a water filtration system for the buildings nearby. This underground chamber measures approximately 138 meters (453 ft) by 64.6 meters (212 ft) and is capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters (2,800,000 cu ft) of water. The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns.

A must for Bond fans. Great place to escape the heat for a little while. Impressive structure, however I would go early as I imagine it must be difficult to get a good impression of the scale when it is busy

Interesting place - it comes with history and magnificient construction engineering. I would invest more in the ambiental lights; I believe it would look more interesting. It is worth visiting but don't expect too much.

So worth a visit. You don’t really need a guide as there is a lot of banners with information in English as you go through it. Mind blowing what people built so long ago.

Plan to visit this Basilica Cistern during a hot time or if its raining nearby.

Amazing to think that this whole place was built under the city, hundreds of years ago.

Now I want to watch the movie Inferno again!

On a side note. This place is nice to visit, spending maybe half an hour. But don't change your plans for it. Worth it if you are nearby in the area.

You will find people downstairs to take photos of you in Ottoman costumes. Odd place, but some people like it :)

I am a Civil Engineer, specialised in water, so I love these structures. Not sure why it is so attractive to the rest of the people, but there is quite a lineup to get in. No question about it, building it centuries ago required considerable talent. Overall, worth visiting if you are in the area (nearby the blue mosque and st. sophie)
