“Prison Turned Hotel”
Reviewed 27 November 2013

It's hard believe this hotel was actually a prison at one time. Today it's a 5-star hotel located near numerous city attractions that you can walk to. A beautiful atrium garden is located in the center of the hotel. Great cuisine is what you would expect from Four Seasons and they have a wonderful buffet breakfast. However, the small spa isn't impressive and there is no hair salon on site but they will refer you to a salon down the street if you would like to have your hair done. There is also no swimming pool or hot tub in the building.

Room Tip: Garden view room rooms are very quiet.

This was a business trip with a group of colleagues, and I have to be honest and say it was total luxury and caring service. The place was simply but beautifully furnished - for a former prison...!
The rooms are elegant, with the very best facilities, even an iPad - totally addictive. One delightful touch was when I left a book in the room; when I returned a bookmark had been placed in the right page. Now that's service. There are no signs scattered around the hotel, just staff always available and unobtrusive, ready to answer any questions. A truly delightful experience.

This is a special place - ideally placed in between the Blue Mosque and Aya Sophia and a stones throw from Topkapi Palace and the various restaurant districts of Sultanahmet.

The staff are VERY good - we arrived in a taxi from the airport and they knew our names (presumably by monitoring the arrival of our flight?) ...... I find you only get that kind of attention to detail in top hotels.

The food was brilliant and the "cheese and love" evening on Friday is not to be missed. Breakfast is expensive but worth it.

I doubt there is a better hotel in Istanbul ......

I stayed at both Four Seasons in Istanbul during a recent visit and was very pleased with my choices. I highly recommend both.

The Sultanahmet hotel is ideally located for sightseeing in Sultanahmet. The hotel is built on top of a portion of the Great Palace of the Byzantine Emperors, which some archaeology visible in the back garden. The building is full of character and beautifully decorated. The room was spacious, extremely comfortable, and very tasteful. The staff was superb! The only drawback was the construction work on the annex which disturbed from time to time, as well as very thin walls. At times, I felt that my neighbour was in the room with me.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel have views of Hagia Sophia

We just returned from a Mediterranean cruise from Istanbul to Barcelona, and chose the Four Seasons Sultanahmet because of its incredible location directly in the heart of the old city. We were given Suite 217, which was immense, immaculate, and extremely quiet, which is what we requested, due to the length of the flights from Miami/Paris/Istanbul! The suite itself was magnificently decorated, with an enormous bathroom with separate marble bathtub for me and walk-in shower for my husband. I must also say that the lighting in the bathroom was SUPERB (as it is with most Four Seasons), something sadly lacking in many luxury hotels! Our check-in was very quick, which at 5:00 p.m. was most appreciated. We used our $100 USD Platinum Amex Fine Hotel credit for a superb dinner in the lovely glass enclosed restaurant, overlooking the beautifully planted gardens. We also appreciated the electronic shutters, in order to sleep late in the morning and take advantage of the 4:00 p.m. checkout. Unfortunately, we only had one night at this beautiful property, as we were boarding Oceania Riviera (our favorite ship). However, that 4:00 p.m. checkout allowed us the time to walk to the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, as well as the Grand Bazaar, indeed, only a short walk away from the hotel. Breakfast was included and we opted for room service, which was delivered promptly and our order was correct, hot, and delicious. A special thank you to the restaurant staff for the wonderful evening meal. Not only was it fabulous; the service was superb (as the Turkish are known for their hospitality), and it was great fun to speak with our waiter, who had previously worked for the Ritz Carlton in Miami. The architecture of this hotel is (especially from the courtyard) simply breathtaking. To understand that it was formerly the prison built to detain dissident Turkish writers, and now is this unbelievably gorgeous hotel, made the experience all the more magical. We loved the mosaics on the floors; the fine silk Turkish carpets; the luxurious but comfortable furnishings. The cost was 1501.71 TRL (approximately $750.00 USD) for the one night, but it was well worth it, and the next time we catch our ship in Istanbul, we will come well ahead of its' departure so that we can stay at this gem once again!

Room Tip: We were happy to be on the second floor, with many windows overlooking the beautiful courtyard. I i...

The three-storey intimate retreat of 65 rooms and suites in a century-old former prison at the centre of the Old Town will ensure you stay in the lap of history with UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque being a short stroll away. The neo-classical building with its perfectly landscaped lush courtyard garden cafe – formerly the prisoners exercise yard along with ‘Seasons’, the glass pavilion restaurant at its focal point, pays homage to the city’s rich Ottoman heritage. Journey the Old City with its narrow streets allowing your senses to be overwhelmed by scents of incense and spices wafting through the air followed by sundowner cocktails on the terrace overlooking the iconic monuments - an absolute must.

Room Tip: Don’t forget to admire some of the traditional Turkish carpets – ‘kilims’ that adorn the property an...
