Owner description: The Chora Church (Turkish Kariye Müzesi, Camii yahut Kilisesi — variously the Chora Museum, Mosque or Church) is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of a Byzantine church. The church is situated in the western, Erdinekapı district of İstanbul. In the 16th century, the church was converted into a mosque by the Ottomon rulers, and it became a secularised museum in 1948. The interior of the building is covered with fine mosaics and frescoes.

“Take a guide or guidebook with you to enhance visit”
Reviewed 19 November 2013

To get the most out of your visit, make sure you either have a guide or a good guidebook with you, to explain the stories being depicted in the various scenes depicted by the mosaics and frescos. This is a little gem of a museum, and is definitely worth straying a bit off the beaten path to visit.

“Late Byzantine Gem Worth the Trip”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

If you have more than two days in Istanbul and like Byzantine art, the Chora church-museum (14th cent. AD) is a spectacular assembly of mosaics. It's a bit away from most other sights, so a taxi to/from is really needed. Well worth the effort.

“Nice but very small”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

An old 15c. church, with some interesting frescos. It is built on the site of series of other churches, It is to the north in the Golden Horn and not too easy to find - even the locals were struggling. 15TL in and it is 4 largish rooms , the rest was under renovation. The frescos are not all complete but are quite attractive and interesting.
Just about worth the effort of getting there and getting back

“Small but perfectly formed”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

Nice to leave the city behind and see the walls on the journey to this small but intensely decorated church. The mosaics are brilliant - and the frescoes too. But it is small and will not take long to see.

“It's a must even if you are not passionate about history of art”
Reviewed 14 November 2013

Some of the previous reviewers stated that it is not worth to go to the Chora church as the ticket prices are high and it is almost impossible to get there without a car. I dare to disagree- Chora church is exeptional example of byzantine mosaics. By the word exeptional I mean that nowhere in the world will you find 14th century mosaics of such outstanding quality and as completely preserved. Before getting there I strongly recommend to read some books or at least Wikipedia articles on byzantine art to fully apreciate this magnificent relic of lost and forgotten splendour.
