“Blue mosque location and comfy beds!”
Reviewed 10 July 2012

I had only average expectations for this hotel, but they were slightly exceeded and thus receive a bit higher rating that I would usually be inclined to give.
My travel companion and I had two single rooms- 304 and 306. My room (306) was slightly larger and had a mini refrigerator. Both rooms had a closet with a safe, small flatscreen tv with cable (I think the only English channel was BBC), desk or table, one chair and a compact bathroom. The windows open onto the street located close to the famous Four Seasons and around the corner from the Blue Mosque. It's also a short walk to the tram line and there are many restaurants and coffee shops nearby, as well as a small grocery store around the corner, where we stocked up on bottled water. One night, we took a taxi back from Taksim Square and it was 14TL, which seemed like a reasonable price.
The beds were quite comfortable and it was easy to fall back asleep after the ~5am call to prayer that could be heard very loudly. Hotel staff are very helpful (though as always, be cautious about recommendations provided by a hotel, here they gave us a packet of brochures, but we already had our own plans for the trip).

We found our six days at the Uyan Hotel comfortable and all that we needed, the staff were very helpful and provided excellent advice and service. It is well located within easy walk to most attractions and lots of places to eat etc.

I had high expectations based on other reviews but sadly the place was only OK. The small single room truly lives up to its name; you will be unable to open a suitcase in there. Another reviewer had a great tip I wish I'd known: always ask if they have anything else available. If you're a light sleeper bring earplugs as the street can be noisy and the morning call to prayer is at 4:30 AM. Staff at reception is warm and friendly and the location is outstanding near the Hagia Sofia and Blue Mosque. Free wifi is a huge bonus as well. However I think you can find a better hotel for a better price if you shop around.

Room Tip: Ask if they have anything larger than the small single!

So nothing bad about this location- right up the street from the Four Seasons (used to be a prison!) and a 1 minute walk to Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. Breakfast is nothing special, but nice because its right there... and has a GREAT view.

Be wary of the guy selling plates next door. Claims they are Turkish and hand-painted. Not really. Plus, they are actually part of the hotel (but they don't tell you!) Don't expect a good deal next door- shop around you will find something better and MUCH cheaper.

Room was nice- we upgraded to hot tub room. WOrth it! Nice size room, clean.

Room Tip: This is a fine place- you will be in the city all day, and this is centrally located. Do it! Just do...

This hotel is just average. There is nothing particularly special about it. The location is good, but there are many hotels in the immediate area, so this factor doesn't put it above others. The rooms are very basic. Didn't even have an alarm clock. The first room I was given was so small that there was nowhere to open my small suitcase other than on the bed. I was moved to a slightly larger room without request and quickly realized that they give you the worst room available at your level, so always ask if there is another room. I did this when a relative joined me a few days later and they gave us a different room than they were originally going to. The staff, particularly at reception, could be much friendlier. Also beware, as with any hotel, of recommendations made by staff, as they always have arrangements between them, and you don't always get the best recommendation/price.

However, the worst part of our stay, and why the hotel is rated terrible overall rather than average, is that our room was given away and no genuine efforts to find a satisfactory solution were made. When we returned to the hotel after spending two nights outside of istanbul, we were advised that our room was given away and that there were no other double rooms available. They wanted to put us in two separate single rooms. When they weren't budging and not making any reasonable offers of accommodation, we were forced to contact the local travel agency which booked this hotel for us as part of a package, who moved us to another hotel. Not only did the hotel at the last minute not have a room booked almost 2 months in advance, but they made no efforts to contact us in advance or the tour agency that booked the hotel to advise us of this, so that we could have sorted it out sooner. Instead, we wasted over an hour in their lobby arguing about what to do and calling our agency. They should have had a better back up plan ready in case we didn't accept the two single rooms and they should have immediately moved us to another hotel, since it was their responsibility to have our room available.

Given the many options in the area, you can do better.

Room Tip: Always ask if there are other rooms available and ask to see them.

Fantastic location for the tourist, just a block away from Ayia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Hipodrome; the Sultanahmet tram stop is just across the park (although during the day you have to wade through a crazy sea of tour buses and crowds). Outside the hotel front door are a few shops and restaurants, but not the cacophony of tourist places a little further down the hill: so you have a relatively quiet and civilized front door before you leap into the tourist zone of the city.

We had selected this hotel both for location and for its roof terrace. We had planned on spending some time on the terrace, relaxing after tourist outings. The terrace does have commanding views of the monuments, the city and the sea, as well as a jumble of nearby roofs. As it turned out, the weather was cool, changeable, often wet when we were ready for some downtime. The terrace is simply furnished, and does provide a nice spot for enjoying some views.

We were shown to our room, which was on the first floor, facing a wall on the side away from the street. While we weren't planning on spending a huge amount of conscious time in the room, it did feel closed in. We asked for an alternative room, higher up (the hotel has four floors); all were full that night, but we were moved to the second floor the next night and for the rest of our stay. This room faced greenery, and was sunny and airy: much better, comfortable, and relatively large. Bathroom was adequate if not very large. Everything was very clean and tidy. The bed was comfortable.

Buffet breakfast was offered each day in a sunny room on the top floor. No city views, but pleasant simple setting. Nothing fancy offered, but adequate: breads, cereals, yogurt, fruit, olives, warm hard-boiled eggs, room-temperature pre-prepared omelet, cheeses, cold cuts, tea, coffee, fruit juice (from concentrate).

Wifi worked very well in room and in breakfast dining room, although it required logging in after every time we closed the iPad cover. Our room had a few power outlets, but could have used more for iPad, iPhone, cameras; we needed to use the outlet in the bathroom for one of the phones.

We needed to have some clothes washed: the laundry service was affordable.

The staff seemed at first reluctant and humorless, but that was just the first impression. They were helpful with our questions and issues, such as moving to a better room. In response to our question about the tram service, the man at the front desk suddenly excused himself and dashed downstairs. He quickly returned with one of his electronic transit cards and lent it to us for the rest of our week-long stay. He told us how to replenish its value, and having the card made moving around the city a lot easier. Thoughtful help.

I stayed at Hotel Uyan for 5 nights in early June 2012.

I was picked up at the airport by the hotel taxi despite being delayed at passport control - I was worried the driver may leave after waiting for a while, but he was still around and came along when I got the information centre to make an announcement that I was waiting there.

I opted for the small single room. It is exactly that - small ! The first night, I was given a room which was tiny. I was not disappointed, having seen the photos on their website - do have a look as it will help set expectations. Unfortunately, foul smell was emanating from the bathroom sink, so the next night I moved to a larger (but still pretty small) room. This is really my only negative comment but I should say the hotel staff understood and upgraded me free of cost to this larger (but still pretty small) room.

The staff were very helpful and generally knowledgeable. Breakfast was okay with decent choice - bread, cereal, juice etc. The roof-top has an okay view (not outstanding like some guests claim!). The hotel does not have a restaurant, although there are a couple just outside the hotel. I wasn't woken up by any prayer calls, it was generally quiet.

For a traveller who will spend very little time in the room and only needs a comfortable (and not a luxurious) stay overnight, this is a very good option. Overall I'd say a good, practical option especially if you are travelling on a budget.
