“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2013

I stayed at the Barceló Erisin Topkapi for 4 nights in April 2013, along with 2 friends from work. We each had our own room and all the rooms met expectations. This is an older 5-star hotel located just inside the far reaches of the old city wall that once surrounded Istanbul. As other travelers have said, there is a tram line right outside the hotel and it takes you to all the main tourist attractions in the old part of the city within minutes, and very cheaply. You can buy tickets at the small kiosk that sells water, chocolate bars, etc. directly across from the hotel (on the other side of the street). If you are staying for a few days it may be worth it to invest in a pass which is transferable and which gives you a better rate on individual fares. Getting back to the hotel, I liked this place a lot. I got a great deal for us on the internet so the room rates were reasonable, but of course it is a 5-star so everything else was expensive. Very expensive. But that said, the breakfast was excellent, the service was great, the front desk staff were tremendously helpful, and it was a pleasure just to sit in the lobby and look out at the street. The pool, hot tub, and sauna facilities were a welcome treat and the exercise room seemed well equipped. My room was spacious, bright, comfortable, with a good bed and a flat screen TV. There seemed to be only one adult channel in English that was not about news, so that was a little disappointing - some HBO would have been appreciated. The bathroom was a bit dated but fine. We were all on the top floor and had balconies. The only real complaint was that there was no temperature control. The hotel had the heat turned on and my room was pretty warm. I dealt with that by turning off the ventilation system and leaving the balcony door open day and night. It seemed pretty safe to do so. We used the hotel tour service and frankly, I would suggest finding an alternative as the tours we did (the old city walking tour and the boat tour on the Bosphorus) got us to all the sites advertised but the guides spoke limited English and were really not tour guides in that they had little knowledge to share about what we were seeing. These tours were a bit pricey too. If not for a friend of one of the people in our little group, we would have missed seeing two of the highlights of our stay in Istanbul: the Galata Tower with the nearby amazing Istiklal walking street and the ancient vast and beautiful underground Roman cistern system - the latter is really a must see and one could easily by-pass the small building that is the entrance. All in all though, I would strongly recommend this hotel if you can get a good rate. It was a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor so you have a balcony.

Stayed a week with my wife, three days business and four days tourism. Been in Istanbul before so we appreciated the location exactly on the ancient walls of Constantinople. In the walking distance there is the famous church of Chora with exemplary Byzantine mosaics. For everything else there is a tram station in front of the hotel. For 3 TL (an euro and a half) you will get in front of Grand Bazaar, then Sultanahmet (Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Basilica cystern ..), then Topkapi Palace, Archeology Museum, and finally the Spice Bazaar!
The hotel could be better. Rooms are not sound-proof and you hear the muezzin from down till dusk plus later they sing for an evening prayer. And if the neighbours are noisy you will hear them through the tiny door.
On the other side the hotel has good points. At the breakfast a wide variety of turkish delicacies are served but the best for pork lovers is the Spanish corner with "jamon", salami, and small sausages, just to break the dullness of the halal counterpart (really don't like the beef salamis and stuff). The selection of fruit is excellent.
We had the opportunity to try lunch and dinner, both buffet-style. A wide variety of food was served, and the turkish pastries were impressive.
A visit to the hotel spa is a must. Apparently many locals (mostly men) also come there to test their manhood. There was a guy doing pushups underwater in the pool for babies; another guy took the finnish sauna to be test of his manhood - after the sauna he went into the "shock showers for sauna" and immediately back to sauna and so forth. In the hammam an older guy first explained the ritual (nice of him) and then insisted to pour soap all over the body of my wife. Hm. Did not want to offend him so we just laughed ...
If you get thirsty after the sauna there is a happy hour for alcoholic beverages (2 for the price of 1) where the price for Efes Pilsen becomes reasonable (17-19h in the B lounge).
All in all, a nice hotel. The staff is very friendly. Maria from the customer relations called us three times to check if everything is OK. At last I persuaded her that if there would be something wrong I would tell her then.

We used this hotel over the Easter holidays for a 8 night city break to Istanbul, staying on a half board basis in the Deluxe Club Premium room. Found it suitable for our needs as it slept a family of 4 comfortably. Buffet service provided for breakfast and evening meals. The menu spread covered all nationalities and catered for all. However found the beef & chicken a bit over cooked to my liking. Lamb was really moist and recommended if served.

The hotel is rated a 5 star, which I think is overrated. Deserves a solid 4 star rating.

The Pazartekke stop on T1 tram line is just outside the hotel and made journeys to all the essential sites easy to reach within 20 minutes. Recommend everyone to get an Istanbulkart as fares are cheap and you can use it on the metro, trams, buses and ferries to get around the city.

If your coming from the airport the cheapest way to arrive at the hotel is to take the metro from the airport to Zeytinburnu station and interchange with the T1 tramline. Ride will be about 20 minutes and a lot cheaper than the fair the taxi driver will charge you.

Room Tip: WiFi in the room wasn't the best. My laptop & phone struggled to get good strength signal du...

I spent four days in April 2013 in this hotel, having the opportunity to try its good level.
I just could critizise the location, which is a litte far from the city.
But the tramway line T1, which is in front of the hotel, reduces considerably the problem.
During my stay I enjoied very much the internal spa, included in the room price.
I would recommend this hotel to my friend, suggesting them to buy an all-inclusive package, breakfast included, because the price of the buffet-breakfast seemed to me quite high.

Room Tip: Choose rooms not in front of the road.

Room Deluxe was ok, we'd rather had a shower than a tub in the bathroom. Good buffet with variations of tipical turkish food. Friendly and helpful staff. Interesting mixture of international guests. Perfect place slightly outside the busy centers of town and although next to a large street with a lot of traffic surprisingly quiet. Next mosque 100 meters away, no problem with the muezzin's prayers. Not luxurious, perhaps not 5 star level, but who cares? The price of the room booked in the internet wasn't 5 star level either. Would choose the Barcelo Eresin again for the next trip to Istanbul.

I booked this hotel as part of a 'secret hotel' deal on a well-known travel website. It was billed as 5 star and although I would not agree with this, I had a comfortable and pleasant stay with my partner for 3 nights here.

The hotel itself is located just outside the centre of Istanbul, opposite the 'Pazartekke' tram station. This is a very useful tram line as it connects directly to the 'Sultanhamet' area of Istanbul (the area with the highest concentration of sights e.g. Blue Mosque, Aya Sofia, Basilica Cistern). It takes approx 15 minutes on the tram to reach this area. Other useful stops on this line include 'Beyazit' (for Grand Bazaar), 'Tophane' (for Istanbul Modern) and Eminonu (Spice Market/bus station/Ferry Pier for Bosphorus and Princess Islands cruises). There is also another useful tram line around the corner about 10 minutes walk away which connects to the area where the Chora Church is located. Taxis are also plentiful if you require one and the friendly hotel reception staff will help organise this. I recommend buying an Istanulkart from the newsagent kiosk displaying the 'Akbil' sign across the road from the hotel and next to the tram station. Provide extra money to be loaded on to the card when you purchase it as there is no machine to reload instanbulkarts at the 'Pazartekke' stattion. There are token machines, however, for single journeys etc. I recommend reloading the Istnabulkart at Sultanahmet or Eminou stations (electronic machine and you can select 'English' as language).

The hotel itself is comfortable but now in need of refurbishment (was probably fitted out 10 years ago). Our room was of a decent size on the fifth floor and was fairly comfortable. Fixtures and fittings showing their age a bit now, however. Bed was clean and very comfortable, bathroom was OK. Toiletries are provided as are complimentary bottles of spring water. Flat screen TV with a few English news channels. Housekeeping staff do an OK job but you may have to ask if things were not replaced (e.g. our flannels/glasses were not). There is also a Carrefour supermarket around the corner from the hotel, opposite Shell garage which is useful for cheap snacks/drinks etc.

All in all, this hotel suited my needs as a good value yet comfortable place to stay with good transport connections. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good value stay just don't expect 5 star luxury! PS I paid for private airport transfers with the hotel and this was very much worth the money - efficient and stress-free start and end to our holiday.

Room Tip: Rooms towards the back but not on the side are the quietest.

Fairly good hotel, would not say five star but friendly staff. Free wifi was great. Location about 10mins by tram to main sights. Rooms were great including bath robes and slippers (one less thing to pack) but the smell of smoking in the room was bit of a downer. Had to ask housekeeping to get rid of the smell.
Hotel could improve by having smoking in only certain rooms and have tea/coffee in each room (5 star).

Room Tip: Ask for a non smoking room and a king size bed, most rooms had two singles.
