I just wanted to say what a fantastic stay we had at the Nena Hotel in Istanbul. The hotel is very well located within walking distance of a lot of the major attractions, the rooms are spotlessly clean and serviced daily, the breakfast superb and the staff very friendly and helpful. I would have no problem in recommending this hotel to anyone visiting this wonderful city.

Lovely hotel with a great location, friendly staff and withing walking distance of the main attractions you'll want to see in the old city. Very close to Hop On Hop Off bus starting point. We were very pleased with our choice of hotel and would definitely stay there again.

Our Hotel Nena experience was good overall. The staff member who greeted us was kind and generous with tourist information for us. The room was clean and small, but that is the case with all hotels in this part of the city. Breakfast was quite nice, plentiful too. The location is very prime; so close to the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia and near any kind of convenience store you might need. We were also given free airport transfer which was very helpful.

The biggest downside of this hotel was room temperature; and this varies depending on which room you get. The economy rooms in the middle of the building which do not have outward facing windows are quite awful. Though it was wonderfully cool outside, our room was HOT and impossible to sleep in. It was not explained to us why this was the case, though there was some talk of the heating system being down. Upon first complaint, we were handed a small, old and somewhat dirty fan which did not help, and so we pressed for another solution. After a couple of night hours stewing, we were finally moved to a room with a window which was much better. Some of the later staff were slightly dismissive and at times disingenuous with us - even when seemingly offering to help.

What I did appreciate about the hotel was their trying to make it a good stay for us after the hot room episode. Having said that I don't know why they wouldn't have moved us to a cooler room earlier; knowing the system was down or after our first complaint. And later, they behaved repeatedly as though we had made a fuss over nothing. If I were to go back I would choose another hotel as there are many within this price range which would have made our experience less stressful.

Room Tip: AVOID the economy room.

The entire staff here at Hotel Nena in Istanbul is
dedicated to doing everything possible to assure that
our clients enjoy all aspects of their stay with us. And we are
very proud of the fact that the hundreds of reviews posted by past
clients on Tripadvisor overwhelmingly show that to be the case.
As it was Easter season, our hotel was nearly fully booked and
the client chose to take an economy room. And as Istanbul at that time is
not hot (08-15 C), the clients were informed that the when the weather is cool, AC might not
be on . In order to satisfy them, our staff offered a complimentary upgrade of
room category as soon as it was confirmed that the available room was not
being held for a late arrival. AC was available on the second day,
and we included a free return shuttle trip to the airport.
We are happy that these clients indicated that all the rest of their
experiences here at the Nena were very satisfactory.
Once again, the entire staff here at Hotel Nena takes great pride in offering
our guests a most welcoming, comfortable and memorable stay.
Sincerely

Always coming to Istanbul I prefer to stay in this hotel. It has great location. Very good breakfast is situated on the top of the roof with spectacular view to the most important places of interest and Bosphorus. Rooms are very clean. Last time I was upgraded to the suite room with really great view to the city and with a big balcony. Staff of the hotel is very nice and always ready to help. Restaurant on the roof is one of the best restaurants in the district and has really nice view to the night Istanbul.

If I had to write this review a few hours after checking in, it would have been scathing. As it was, they bumped us up to a better room and did their best to make us happy, which I do appreciate.

After booking a room with a view to the ventilation shaft (I'm fine with no view), they emailed me confirming the room and stating that I understood that there was an opening to a ventilation shaft only. Perhaps this was a warning sign - I replied asking if the room temperature would be warm as a result, and they assured me that it would not be. However, upon arrival, we found that the room was stifling - I was sweating within 5 minutes. And it was not just us, the guests in the room next door (who's room we could see directly into) were covered in sweat when we saw them later. When we complained to the staff, they were extremely reluctant to do anything about it, and only later brought us an old, dirty fan. Needless to say, this did nothing, and we complained again that for 150 or more Euros a night we felt we could do a lot better than an extremely uncomfortable room. Only after a few hours, and with much reluctance, did they bump us up to another room which had an opening onto the street. But it seemed like they were very unhappy to do so, and it showed in their manner.

I was unhappy that promises made were not initially honored - namely, that the room would be cool. The new room also had no AC, but at least with an open window there was air flow and some cool air.

That experience really painted the rest of our stay there negatively, even though there was little else to complain about. No outside noise in the rooms meant a comfortable sleep, and the hotel was clean and pleasant. Save one or two particular people, the staff were friendly. When we first arrived, Mehmet offered us a refreshment and gave us a short briefing of what to do and not to do in Istanbul.

It is clear that, after our initial unpleasant experience and their reluctance to deal with it, they were under instruction to make us happy. Even though we shortened our stay to 2 nights, they still honored the free airport transfer promise (which usually costs 25 EUR if you stay less than 3 nights). And when we left, they gifted us a box of Turkish delight (they do this with all their guests it seems, but it's a nice touch).

Overall the experience started badly but got better. For potential visitors, I would say avoid the rooms with a view to the ventilation shaft at all costs. If you do this, your stay should be pleasant. Also, book well in advance. We booked that horrible room for about 200 USD only because the nicer rooms were priced at 1000 USD for the nights we booked, an insane price. I don't know if it was a mistake by the online booking website we used, but that does not represent value for money at all. Booking in advance, and off season too, sees the prices drop dramatically.

Room Tip: Do NOT choose the budget room - the one with the window to the ventilation shaft. This is extremely...

Brilliant location - quiet side street, 3 minutes walk to the Blue Mosque and Haiga Sofia. Couldn't be better! Very friendly and attentive stuff, we've got help with all our endless requests (tourist tips and recommendations, reservations for taxi and restaurants, etc) and a birthday cake for one of our friends who had birthday during the stay. Nice design of lobby and rooms, room cleaning - just perfect! Great breakfast and a stunning "postcard" view from the terrace. There is a nice winter garden on the ground floor, and it's allowed to smoke there. We'll definitely stay at Nena the next time.
