“Good value hotel”
Reviewed 21 November 2008

I stayed at the Nena with a friend for 3 nights in November and would recommend the hotel.

The hotel is in a good location for seeing the main tourist sights (Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Aya Sofya, Grand Bazaar) and there are numerous restaurants within easy walking distance.

Our room was a good size and very clean. Breakfast is a buffet with a good selection of foods available. The rooftop terrace has excellent views, of the Blue Mosque in particular.

If you arrive at Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen airport I would recommend using www.sabihagokcenairportshuttle.com. For 10 euros we were met at the arrivals gate and then dropped off at the door of the hotel. You will be sharing the minibus with others and they may be dropped off first but this was a very good value and friendly service.

My wife and I, along with another couple stayed at the Nena Hotel after our Eastern Med cruise. I had made all of the reservations directly with the hotel. When we arrived, the entire hotel staff could not have been nicer. I believe that since I had made both reservations, they upgraded my wife and I to a suite which had a balcony overlooking the Haggia Sofia and the Blue Mosque. What a thrilling sight at night. Our travelling companions were next door in a smaller room, but the staff was very gracious in allowing them to move into our room after our departure.(They were staying two additional nights.) The location of the Nena Hotel was outstanding. We could easily walk to almost all of the attractions wihtin Sultanhamet. Walking time would never exceed 10 minutes(unless you stopped to shop along the way).

Overall, a very pleasant experience. We would not hesitate to stay at the Nena Hotel should we visit Istanbul again.

We stayed 4 nights at the Hotel Nena and were very pleased with our choice. The hotel is located very close to the sights of the Sultanahmet (Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Underground Cistern and the Grand Bazaar). It is also very close to the tram line. If you ride the tram to the end of the line and then walk about a block you can visit the Dolmbahce Palace. On your return, after you cross the bridge, you can get off and get a boat for the cruise up the Bosphorus and across the street visit the Spice Bazaar.
The hotel upgraded our room to a triple when we arrived. It was large, clean, and had a small balcony. The decor is nothing to rave about , but the beds were comfortable and the room nicely kept. The staff especially make the stay very special. We had a suitcase damaged on our flight to Istanbul and the staff assisted us in contacting the airline. We were picked up and returned to the Ataturk Airport free of charge.
We had dinner in the rooftop terrace the night we arrived and the food was very good. The view of the Blue Mosque, lit up at night ,was beautiful from the terrace. At breakfast, there was a wide variety of choices and they were well prepared. There was free internet service, an enclosed garden terrace off the lobby, and reception had free safety deposit boxes available for their guests. We would definitely stay at the Hotel Nena if we return to Istanbul.

Very pleased with free arrival airport transfer. Very good double room with fresh smell. Daily fresh towel supplied. View from the room is not crucial as the terrace restaurant has the astonishing view of the mosque and hagia sophia-breathtaking. Anyway you will spend most of your time away from the hotel sightseeing. All within walking distance. Tramway is 1 minute walk. Breakfast is really good but lack of choice over our 3 day stay. Staff were all polite especially the concierge Mr Mehmet. I would strongly suggest to the hotel to provide two way free airport transfer to ALL guests regardless duration of stay because this would make your service 6 star. My wife and I will definitely come back to the hotel next visit to Istanbul.

We were looking for a hotel in Istanbul that was conveniently located to the historic sites, clean and comfortable for a reasonable price and this hotel met all of those qualifications. Very good value.

In addition, the staff was great! From finding a last minute guide to offering honest advice, the staff went out of their way to help make our stay pleasant.

This is not a fancy hotel, but it is clean, the beds are comfortable and the location is great! There is a nice garden terrace/dining area that is really nice for relaxing with a beverage at the end of the day and the lobby itself is lovely.

  • Liked — Great value, clean and great location. Airport transfers included in price.

We three friends stayed at Hotel Nena for two nights over a weekend in Istanbul.

From the very first contact to after-the-stay evaluation, no lapse at all on the part of hotel management … in a city where tourists quite often get fleeced.

Perfect location.
Complimentary transfer from Ataturk Airport to the hotel.
128 Euro for three persons … double room with an extra bed. € 121.6 if paid cash. We paid cash.
Taking the price into account, one of the best hotel breakfasts I have so far had.

Of course, not a 5-star room standard but neat and clean. Rooms are not sound proof either.
Beds could also be of better quality … not really comfortable.

However, to summarise a great value for money … no doubt about it.

We stayed at the Hotel Nena for 9 days in September. For the price we felt it is an average hotel in an excellent location (Sultanahmet), and were a little disappointed. However, this could be because we had just come from Santorini where we stayed in an excellent apartment (Enigma Apartments), and Athens where we stayed in a great hotel (Hotel Parthenon), and the building next door to the Nena in Istanbul was a construction site (it was being renovated).

The rooms were at the “budget” end of the range, were on the 1st floor just above reception area, were a bit of a squeeze for 2 people, and without tea/coffee and ironing facilities. The bathroom in our room was small and had small areas of mould in some places in the shower cubicle, but had a great shower height which is important for tall people who get sick of having to bend over to shower in hotel rooms. The corridors on each floor are marble lined without carpet on the floor so any voices above normal quiet conversation level echo very loudly, particularly late at night.

Also, unfortunately for us, the building next door was being renovated so there was a lot of drilling and jack-hammering noise both during the day and well into the evening. For those like us who like to race around until mid-afternoon sight-seeing, and go back to the hotel for a siesta before taking off for the evening/night meal and entertainment, this was pretty well out of the question.

Having said this, the reception staff were excellent - always helpful, pleasant, and courteous, and they provide internet access for free. We had pre-arranged airport transfers through the hotel which were prompt and well worth it. The Roof Terrace breakfast/dining area has views of the Sea of Marmara and the Blue Mosque to rival any hotel in the area, and the breakfast buffet (included in our room price) had a great range of both cold and hot foods. Breakfast on the terrace every morning was a great treat, and the location of the hotel is an absolute winner.

Istanbul is absolutely mental, and for those who haven’t been there it’s a “Must Do” for your travel list. The people are friendly (particularly as most of them are trying to sell you something), although the younger men seem to have a bad tendency of standing uncomfortably close to western women, and take opportunities for the odd grope in big packed crowds when they think they won’t be caught.

All in all the location of the Nena is its strong point, an absolute winner – very close to the tramway on the main street (which is part of an excellent and cheap public transport system) and within walking distance of all the major historical sights within the Eminonu/Sultanahmet/Bazaar districts. Would we go back to Istanbul? Absolutely. Would we go during Ramadan? Absolutely. Would we stay in Hotel Nena? Maybe, maybe not. We’d probably give it another try or think about trying a different hotel in the same area - it'd be a toss of the coin at the time.
