“A very good, charming hotel: Hotel Arena in Istanbul”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 January 2013

Hotel Arena is a very good hotel, very well located, at 100 meter from the most beautiful part of Istanbul, and the service is excellent: everybody so helpful and kind. I reccommend the hotel also because of the good relation between price and service.

Despite the name, The Arena is a smallish, intimate and very friendly hotel in a perfect location for the serious traveller who wants to indulge in the wealth of Byzantine and Ottoman sites in this great city. It was coverted from a fine family house and retains a small Turkish bath in the basement where my wife had a relaxing massage.
Food and drinks were good and reasonably priced. Breakfast (included) can set you up for the day and I'd advise eating the Turkish dishes. But the charm of the hotel, along with beautful decor in the rooms, was the service. I found the staff more helpful and informed than the official tourist office.

My husband and I stayed at the Arena Hotel in the Imperial Suite in June this year after it had been recommended to us by friends. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were more than happy with our room which was very comfortable, clean and spacious. The staff were always friendly and extremely helpful and even looked after some excess luggage for us for two weeks while we did some other travelling. We enjoyed the breakfasts and one or two lunches, however, dinner was very disappointing and there was no sign of fresh fish on the menu which was written up on the black board. The location of the hotel within walking distance to many of the sites was a real bonus and the whole experience was more personal than staying in one of the bigger hotel chains. We would not hesitate to recommend the hotel to friends visiting Istanbul.

Room Tip: At the very least I would recommend a corner suite or if it is in your budget the Imperial Suite is...

I paid a bit more then $100 a night for a single room at the Arena Hotel.

The actual place is ok, the staff are friendly.

My room was in the basement, I had a great view of a brick wall. The room was not clean, there were hair in the bathroom and it seems that what ever they use to clean brings more hairs back. I cleaned up the hairs on the 1st day, and after they cleaned the 2nd day more hairs appeared which were not mine.

The breakfast was ok as well, certainly nothing special.

The location on the other hand is excellent, a 10 minute walk from most of the important attractions.

Overall, I would not recommend as I think there must be better value and quality for the price in the area. I am returning to Istanbul soon and will certainly be choosing a different accommodation.

Room Tip: Get a high floor

Lovely hotel. Great location. Really good breakfast as part of the hotel payment. the rooms are clean, comfortable and relatively modern. And the staff are so helpful. The only down side was my room was on a lower floor below Reception - there is a staircase that comes down with no door to block the noise from Reception. Plus you are below street level and the room is a bit dark during the day. So make sure you request not to be put on the lower level.

My partner and I stayed at the Arena Hotel for three nights from September 18th 2012. We spent some time deciding which hotel to choose, but finally decided on the Arena because of it's family history and position in Istambul. I also liked the idea of a small hotel, with efficient service. We were not disappointed. We had a comfortable room overlooking a busy street with plenty of space. (We had plenty of luggage as we were travelling to Bodrum for ten days later in the week) The Arena is very well positioned for sight seeing and the ever convenient trams. There are also plenty of good restaurants nearby. My only tiny criticism would be the breakfast. Rather than trying to do a large range of food, I think a smaller choice of options of better quality would be more appropriate.
We would definitely stay at the Arena again , and I will be suggesting my friends and family stay there.
We visit Turkey regularly and I always find the people and their beautiful country inspiring.

We too were offered Turkish coffee and tea on our arrival and introduced to the hotel and what it offers, including a masseuse. They also offered to set up tours for Istanbul, which we declined, but at least they were available. One warning on this - prices were in Euros, so they seemed more reasonable than they actually were since we were used to Turkish Lira by now.

We had a Sultan Corner room which was spacious. comfortable, and had beautiful views. There were amenities galore in the bathroom (which was a decent size), but this was the only hotel we stayed in that didn't offer one complimentary bottle of water. There weren't even glasses for drinking water, so we carried them up from breakfast the next morning.

The location of the hotel was perfect. Only a 5 minute walk to the Blue Mosque and close to a few neighborhood restaurants and a mini-market. One warning, however. It's next to a large mosque and you will be awakened by the pre-dawn call of prayer. Tightly shut windows and earplugs don't lessen the sound by even a decibel. This goes on everywhere, however.

The included breakfast was good, but we would NOT recommend the restaurant (called the Delight Restaurant) for lunch or dinner. We got a very nice bottle of red Turkish wine, but our waiter barely spoke English and we had to ask 3 times to get sparkling water. I also asked if the fish was served with eyes intact and he said no. I ordered it ala carte, not wanting a full course dinner, and later found out it was 23 Euros and it was the whole fish, eyes, skin, bones and all. We did not order much food and our bill came to a shocking 205 TL (around $127). There was an Australian couple at the next table and they were equally feeling ripped off. The food quality was so-so.

We'd definitely recommend this hotel, however. Staying in Old Town is the only way to see Istanbul.

Room Tip: Get a Sultan Corner room.
