“A great lodging experience”
Reviewed 24 December 2013

The Kybele Hotel was recommended to us by someone, and it turned out even better than we expected. The location in Sultanahmet is perfect, but more importantly the charm, warmth, and hospitality of the property and the staff made us feel like we were guests in a private home rather than in a hotel. The staff provided lots of useful information to our many questions. The breakfast offerings were munificent and delicious, so we weren't surprised that the attached restaurant, for dinner, was also excellent; again, we felt like we were guests in a private dining room.

Stayed in this hotel back in April for 5 days, 4 nights. I was a solo traveler here and the first night placed in a double room and then moved to a single room the next day for the remainder of the trip. All of the staff was very friendly, spoke English, and always helped direct the cab drivers to the destinations I was trying to reach outside of old city. The owner of the hotel was gracious from the moment I arrived. He showed me around the entire hotel, where his friends and family were hanging out and even talked to me while helping me chose my first meal. He lived in the states for a while and was even sympathetic/understanding of my vegetarianism! This place was cozy and felt like home after long days of site seeing. An equivalent of one city block was the walk to Aya Sofya and the Blue Mosque. The Grand Bazaar was also a short distance away. Food was authentic and great at the hotel and when I didn't want to leave the hotel. One of the best turkish baths ($$$) was close by. The owner also recommended this place. I think it was a little overpriced but got the whole experience in. Love Kybele!!

In September we visited Turkey for 3 weeks staying in Dalyan and taking an internal flight half way through our holidlay to Istanbul for 4 days. The return flights from Dalaman to Istanbul were very cheap and we paid approximately £60 each return. The flight was an hour and food was included. I came across the Kybele on line and fell in love with the amazing looking hotel immediately. We booked it in June and when we arrived in September, the hotel most definitely stood up to all our expectations and more. The hotel is the most interesting and wonderful hotel I have ever stayed at. Beautiful Turkish lamps hang from every ceiling. The décor and furniture in both the hotel and bedrooms is all antique, beautiful and immaculate. The staff speak fluent English and are helpful and attentive. Ismail and Gozde the owners are very welcoming and generous and we sat with them on a few occasions and had a lovely time. On one evening I noticed a large table in the window which I hadn't seen the day before and was told it had been moved especially as a large party who were eating there wanted to sit near the window. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was very impressive and the hidden garden and library was a wonderful place to relax and chill out in such an amazingly crazy place that is Istanbul. The positioning of the hotel is superb, just a stones throw from all the main tourist attractions with the Cistern Basillica being in the same street. Even if you do not stay at this hotel I would definitely recommend that you visit for something to eat and drink as it is somewhat of a tourist attraction in itself. We did not want to leave and we will most certainly be returning. Thank you to Ismail, Gozde, their daughter and all the staff at the Kybele for a wonderful holiday and we hope to see you all soon. Lee and Nick x

We spent 3 nights spanning the end of October and first of November. I think this hotel, which also has a small restaurant, is one of a kind, decorated with a Turkish theme in old-world style. Rooms are adequate in size, though if you have a lot of luggage you may feel a bit crampted. Bathrooms in old marble, plenty of hot water and towels, but as you will find in many places around the globe, no wash clothes, so bring your own. Those at the front desk speak English, as does the restaurant staff, though to a lesser degree. Our room was on the second level (I believe they consider it the first level) on the street, though quiet in the evening and very quiet even at 7:00 a.m. in the morning. Rooms have cable tv. The small restaurant offers enough variety including the free breakfast. If you like fresh french-style bread, a variety of cheeses, you will be in heaven as I was. About the hotel there are various seating areas, and in the late afternoon and evening these were pretty well occupied by tourists from a variety of countries. The office does have safes for guests. The location is superb. Walking distance to the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar about 15 minutes, to Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, and underground cistern. Also reasonably close to the tram. Lots of restaurants (almost all reasonably priced) and shops in the near vicinity. W found that making reservations, confirming those reservations, and any other info via e-mail was smooth and without problems.

Room Tip: We enjoyed our room overlooking the street. There was very little noise, virtually none from bedtim...

This hotel is unique! Amazing décor with hundreds of lamps on every inch of the ceilings and walls covered with antiques. The only problem is there is no lift and the spiral staircase is quite steep. The food at the roof restaurant was good value and the ambience great after a 30 hour flight. Location is first class with the Cistern 3 minutes down Yerebatan and all the old city sights close by. Staff are very helpful and friendly.

Agree with most of the others -- a quirky little hotel with a very handy location. The small room was, again, a bit too small, but that's all that was open our first night, and the second we were moved to a larger very nice room.
The main thing here, is that the desk staff really know what they are doing. Vefa was very quick in responding to my emails when I booked, and he turned out to be just as friendly a gentleman in person. When he was off, the others weren't quite as English fluent but without exception they were friendly, gave accurate information, and were looking out for the welfare of their customers.
Great hotel -- if you don't like this place, you don't like traveling!

When you are traveling for many weeks it is nice to stay in a hotel that feels like home. The gentlemen that work here are all very helpful, sweet and lovely people. I enjoyed many conversations with the staff at this hotel. The rooms are cozy with the lantern-decorated ceilings and the beautiful antique furniture. We stayed in the small double which was really too small for two people and their luggage. We stayed in the regular double for three nights and it was much nicer; although, much too expensive for the value. I really like the meals I had here too, particularly the stuffed eggplant dish. The breakfasts were also tasty and a wide selection, the jams were so alive in flavor. The hotel is within walking distance to Aya Sofya, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and The Grand Bazaar. For avid walkers, you can walk across the Galata Bridge to the Galata Tower and the vibrant district of Beyoglu in twenty minutes.

Room Tip: For light sleepers choose a room on the third or fourth floor, I found that the noise from people at...
