“Charming and fun”
Reviewed 18 September 2012

We spent five days at the Empress Zoe in June. What a cool hotel! We loved our penthouse room with the wood paneling and private patio. The room had A/C, but we mostly skipped that in favor of cross-breezes, opening even the patio door for the night! Our daughter made friends with the hotel's cats (wild kitties are common in Istanbul but these were tame). And the courtyard breakfasts were lovely and peaceful. Some might complain about the call to prayer, which happens multiple times a day including once at about 4 a.m., but it really seemed to us to be part of the ambiance. There can also be some noise from the lively social scene on the neighboring street, but it didn't go on too late and wasn't that bad from the penthouse.

We could not fault this hotel, it was exactly what we were looking for, in the centre of old Istanbul, near to Topkapi, within walking distance of Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, etc.
The hotel is full of architectural/archaeological details, the enclosed garden an oasis of freshness and calm in this very busy neighbourhood. From the roof terrace you see the Bosphorus and the Istanbul roofline.
The hotel itself is quirky (a spiral staircase to get to some rooms) but we expected this, having read about it on their informative and honest website. I booked the hotel directly myself, not through a travel company or website and it was very easy. The staff were very prompt to answer my queries.
The accommodation was very good (we had the honeymoon suite with a turkish style marble bedroom) the breakfasts excellent. We gorged on the fresh fruit, especially the figs! The staff could not have been any nicer.
We shall return!

Architecturally impressive. Friendly, personal service. Delicious home cooked breakfasts. Decadent washroom in suites. Adored staying here. Studio rooms are quite small, tho the double suites ate amazing. Roof top terrace has amazing view of city & Bosporus. Well located for all tourist sites tho away frm backpacker/hostels.

Empress Zoe is a glorious boutique hotel in the heart of sultanahmet. It is on the doorstep on Aya Sofia and the Blue Mosque. The staff are wonderful, the courtyard is idyllic and the comp breakfasts are delicious. The rooms are a good size. We travelled with our 3 year old daughter and she loved it, even though the main spiral staircase is a bit tricky. The restaurants on the street are nice and serve typical standard fare. We didn't find one restaurant that did something different. Make sure you do a daytrip to Beyoglu and Ortakoy to get out of the tourist areas.

What makes this hotel special is its location and the understated yet delightful and helpful staff. We stayed in the special double with terrace which provides you with a wonderful engagement with the world outside and a relaxing way to while away some time. The hotel and the rooms have local character and charm and breakfast in the garden is a delight. The rooms are not spacious (again the benefit of having the terrace) or luxurious, but they are charming and take you away from the corporate and therefore predictable and sometimes boring hotel rooms. The only draw back is the stairs that you have to climb to the room as there are no lifts. There are also no TV's in the room, which might be a challange for those addicted! I would highly recommend a stay at the Hotel Empress Zoe

Room Tip: The special double with terrace is a great choice

While at Empress Zoe we stayed in a suite. It was perfect for a family of four with 2 twin beds (which switched to couches during the day), a king sized bed, table/chairs, large bathroom with lovely marble shower. The location was spectacular. We walked out the back gate and in a few steps were at the Topkapi Palace entrance. The included breakfast hit the spot. Make sure to try the red pepper and tomato dish, possibly over their fluffy scrambled eggs. The quiet ambiance of the enclosed courtyard was a welcome escape from the outdoor hubbub. The hotel arranged pick up for us at the bus stop and drop off at the airport. This worked flawlessly as did the Turkish bath they reserved one evening.
