“10 nights at the Empress Zoe”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 October 2012

First, I must write that our ten nights as guests at the Empress Zoe were wonderful.
My husband and I are in our seventies. I emailed the Empress Zoe our concerns, stairs and walk in shower being primary. I immediately received an email addressing our concerns with solutions. I booked a double room with a balcony overlooking the garden with only two flights of stairs easy enough to negotiate. Our room became our quiet, comfy refuge within a very vibrant city.

The staff at the Empress Zoe were extraordinary. The men who carried our bags and cleaned our room were especially endearing with their smiles and graciousness. Staff at the desk who we saw everyday were friendly and informative especially Binnur who encouraged and gave us confidence to travel further outside the Sultanahmet giving us tram, bus and ferry routes. The young man who tended the drinks bar in the afternoon was friendly and happy to talk with us about our daily experiences and adventures. He also made a wicked lemonade, very special.

And, oh, the cats! Not only at the Empress Zoe but all over Istanbul.

Breakfast was a treat. I still think about the huge juicy figs and fresh made yogurt.

When in Rome you hear church bells ringing morning and evening. Istanbul you hear the call to prayer from the mosques, one close to the Empress Zoe. Both cities, to me, are defined by by these calls to worship, all the sounds of worship are beautiful.

Empress Zoe was our first hotel in Turkey and we were more than pleased. From the moment we walked into those doors in that very old Inn we knew we were going to love staying there. Our room was very nice and beautifully decorated --- comfortable bedding and good mattress and very clean. The street outside our window was very quiet side street so we weren't disturbed at all with traffic sounds....The breakfast held upstairs was the best we had on our entire 20 day trip --- everything we could possible want and it was beautifully presented and tasted delicious. We sat each day outdoors in there secret garden like patio. The staff was more than accommodating and was always there to help us navigate this new city with great recommendations. We will stay here again the next time we go to Istanbul....we loved it.

Room Tip: We traveled with another couple and they were very happy with their room as well. We had no complai...

I so wanted to fall in love with the Empress Zoe but it never quite did it for me. We stayed in the garden suite which was lovely and the gardens themselves a perfect oasis of calm- so what not to like? We felt that tiny desk and cramped reception area can make for an uncomfortable arrival and departure, and the breakfast serving area seemed a bit muddled. From the roof there are wonderful views of the Bosphorus.

Empress Zoe is located perfectly for visiting the old city of Istanbul, just a couple of streets away from all the sites. Its a peaceful oasis with a lovely garden, perfect for relaxing in after a hard day sightseeing. Our room was spacious and comfortable and spotlessly clean. We really enjoyed our stay in this charming hotel.

Room Tip: Try to get a room over looking the garden , rather than the street.

We found Empress Zoe on the internet and stayed 3 nights in the penthouse ............ wow what a gorgeous place. I stayed with my two grown up daughters and this little 'apartment' was perfect for us with a double bedded room and two singles in the living room........... also a very nice private roof garden with a view of the Blue Mosque.

The staff were lovely, knowledgeable, helpful and charming. Breakfast is served in the garden on the second floor......... delicious. Transfers as planned, location perfect and generally we were very happy staying here.

Room Tip: Penthouse is at the top of the house......... lots of stairs but worth it ! Very quiet, Gorgeous...

We stayed in the "budget room" on the first floor. You can see a picture of the room on their website. It really is tiny tiny.. but definitely lovely and clean, and has a small bathroom. The windows are right above the front entrance and you have a great view (without people looking in due to the foliage) of the street cafes. one word of caution - it can be very noisy till 2am if you keep the windows open (we did). I loved the noises. Also, the loudspeaker for the Call to Prayer is right outside the window. I will definitely stay there again on my next visit. great location! great breakfast! friendly staff! beautiful garden and outdoor terrace. There is a beautiful charm to this hotel.

Room Tip: there is a tight spiral staircase you must take even to the first floor. They will carry your bags...

So delighted we managed to book here. Warm, inviting, charming place with great comfortable suite and views to die for. Superb garden to have a great breakfast and evening drinks in. This is a no frills place with oodles of charm. The staff as helpful as any I have encountered. Location is in touristy Sultanahmet near to Topkapi, the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia and some great restaurants. We walked everywhere from this superb place. I wish we could have stayed a month.
