“Great hotel near the main sites”
Reviewed 8 April 2013

Just spent a few days in the family room, which was a great room, even if the stairs were steep after a long day sight seeing :) As advised there are a lot of stairs, but the location, rooms, garden, breakfast, view from the roof are great.
There is loads of restaurants just outside the hotel and a nice shop next door, and wife liked the kittens that were in the carpet shop.
Not the cheapest hotel but you get good value for money, a great location, friendly staff, and friendly cats.
We found it very helpful for the hotel to arrange the airport transport

Empress Zoe has a great location. It also is a building full of character. We stayed in the top floor suite with the roof garden and views of the Sea of Marmara and Hagia S. But, but, but when it rained, water came through the windows. The staff was very helpful and very conscientious overall. But, but, but the day we checked out, the receptionist virtually gave us the cold shoulder. The hotel came to pick us up at the airport for a fee. The driver looked so young that I thought he was accompanying someone else. Yet we got to the hotel safely and all was well. So, the dodginess came with the splendour of being in the heart of Sultanahment.

Room Tip: There is no elevator so one must be mobile. And if one can afford it, get the bigger rooms with view...

I've stayed here twice and loved it each time. Quirky in the best way, great breakfast, some rooms have original art, adjoins the ruins of a centuries old hammam, great staff. Romance aplenty. Check out the rooftop for views of both the Bosphorus and Hagia Sophia.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper level room to minimize street noise and maximize the view.

A small really beautiful hotel in the heart of Istanbul's Sultanahmet - a few minutes walk from Aya Sofia and the Blue Mosque ... many of the rooms are small, but all are beautifully appointed, clean and very comfortable. All the details are taken care of: colourful Turkish bedspreads and hangings, the best hand-made soaps in the bathrooms .... The staff unfailingly friendly and helpful, collaborating in every possibly way, the breakfast delicious. There is always someone on hand to carry luggage up the many stairs. The small garden by the Byzantine ruins and the roof terrace call for warmer weather than when our party stayed. The rooms over the garden are quiet whereas those on the street (pedestrian street) can be disturbed by noisy tourists in the various bars and restaurants around. Fortunately those rooms have double windows and the tourists eventually retire to their hotels! I recommend the Empress Zoe without hesitation to visitors to Istanbul!

As long as you don't need to carry large suitcases up the narrow winding stairs inside the hotel, that is! We loved the location, the quaint quirkiness of the hotel, and the staff, who were ceaselessly helpful. The breakfasts were excellent as well. I only wish that we'd visited maybe a month later, when all the flowers would have been in bloom -- that would've been gorgeous. The hotel is wonderfully located close to the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia, and Topkapi Palace. The staff was also very helpful in arranging transfers to and from Ataturk Int'l Airport. One caution might be that their recommended restaurants are a bit on the pricey side of things. The view from the roof is really nice.

Thank you for your positive review. We very much appreciated it and are glad that you enjoyed your stay. I would like to clarify your statement "unless you have to carry heavy suitcases up the winding staircase". This was probably meant as a humorous remark but it is ambiguous and makes it sound as if our guests have to carry their own bags. We ALWAYS have porters to carry the bags 24/7. The only time guests carry bags is when they insist that they do not need help with bags and even then our staff insist on offering help. Sometimes people carry their bags down without calling for a porter. We guarantee that you do not have to carry bags in our hotel.

We create a list of recommended restaurants every year based on our own experiences and those of our local friends and the restaurants that most of our guests have liked and recommended. These range from the most authentic and economical kebab place we know to chic and sophisticated places with great views. We often make a note "expensive". We do try to recommend places that will enhance our guests' Istanbul experience.

Empress Zoe came highly recommended and didn't disappoint. Helpful and friendly staff, great breakfasts, clean attractive rooms (though some single rooms better than others), and right in the heart of the old city. What's not to like?
