“Never Stay Anywhere Else”
Reviewed 4 June 2013

We stayed in 4 different rooms, even though we booked months in advance. The place is so popular they kindly moved us around. The breakfasts were spectacular, the location could not have been more convenient, the cats are a bonus and the staff is very helpful. When I go back to Istanbul, I will stay right here. We had tea at the Four Seasons and I had absolutely no hotel envy!

Close to all major attractions and located at a busy intersection but once inside you would not even know.
At reception staff speak English and very helpful.
Be prepared to walk up narrow winding stairs at reception to get to room.
Rooms are excellent roomy & very clean, bathroom great. There is a garden area to have breakfast which has an extremely peaceful atmosphere.
Good Internet connection.

Room Tip: There were 4 of us and we stayed in a family room which was very spacious. Great value!

We stayed here for three nights. Great location with a 5 minute walk to major old city sights. Great hotel. Lovely breakfast, bar. Climb up to the top to the rooftop for sunrise / sunset.
Also recommend the restaurant right across the street - Kosk.

Empress Zoe almost camouflaged in the Old City of Istanbul and an ideal location for exploration.
Twin attractions Blue Mosque and Aya Sophia visible from hotel terraces.
Nearby Archaeological museums,Topaki palace and Grand Bazaar complete amazing combination of "must see" attractions.
Hotel charming lay out with fabulous reception area, wonderful winding staircases, patios and rooftop views of Old city and Marmara sea. Exuberant leafy garden ideal for breakfast and late evening night-cap. Staff hospitable, relaxed, courteous and obliging.
Easy access to good value taxis for cross city excursion.
Countless excellent choices for nearby restaurants with outstanding fish cuisine.
Distinctive style Turkish shopping experience with "courteous" haggling across all price ranges a fascinating experience.
Empress Zoe`s ideal location and hospitality will quickly reward and stimulate you to come back again and again.

Booking our stay via the hotel website was very simple; e-mails promptly answered. Efficient pick-up from Ataturk airport was appreciated at 10pm on a Sunday. 10% discount on the advertised prices for payment in cash.

We had one night in the family suite, which was up rather a lot of stairs. The two (small) children's beds were in a curtained-off part of the room. Our remaining three nights were in the Villa Zoe Courtyard Suite with separate bedroom and sitting room. Cool (in both meanings of the word) and spacious.

Staff unfailingly helpful (helped book meals out, taxis etc.). Nice buffet style breakfasts. Bar open from 4-11pm with very reasonably priced drinks. No lunches or evening meals, but zillions of eating options nearby. Hotel very clean.

There might be some access issues. The rooms were reached by a tight spiral staircase rising out of reception. There may be alternative access arrangements that we never saw.

All-in-all a great place for a couple who want to explore Istanbul.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are up steep flights of stairs; check if you have mobility problems.

There are lots of pictures on the hotel's website that make this hotel look 'glossier' and 'boutiquier' than it is but we enjoyed staying in this unusual hotel. Best things for us were:-
its character;
its peaceful garden, lovely for breakfast and a beautifully lit and tranquil spot to retire to in the early/late evening;
the rooftop terrace with views;
the friendly staff;
the location.
The breakfast was nice and plentiful and there are several cats - the ginger one is delightful and a friendly breakfast companion.
We had what they called a Family Room when we booked but on the new website is now a Grand Double - there are at least two of these, on the street side. The canopied double bed was comfortable but the two singles are really day beds - would be fine for young kids - but the shower room is very small indeed - just enough room for loo, wash basin and shower -certainly not as grand as some of the bathrooms pictured. Aircon and fridge in the room (both useful but noisy at night - we had to switch the fridge off in the end as it kept us awake!!). This room has double glazing to its three windows (though you can't see out of two of them as they are covered with wisteria!!) and the view from the third one on the third floor is not great) so you wont be disturbed by the lively bars/restaurants if you keep the windows closed. The bars are open til about 3am.
The double glazing will not prevent you from hearing the call to prayer at 5am from the Blue Mosque and the Aya Sofya, both of which are barely a couple of streets away! You get used to hearing them and they are an atmospheric part of the trip to this fascinating city.
Some great bars and restaurants in the busy street nearby - try the Shadow Bar for friendly staff and good meze and pizzas. If you want delicious food and a much more restrained approach to service then most of the other places, we heartily recommend Metropolis.

I have had the pleasure of staying at the Zoe twice, and it will always be one of my very favorite hotels in the world. The location is perfect and the staff are absolutely top-notch (you won't find friendlier or more helpful people - be sure to visit Suleyman in the bar!). Breakfast is outstanding, with a gorgeous spread of traditional Turkish foods. I don't like hotels that feel generic, even if they are luxuriously appointed - I want to feel like I'm in Turkey when I'm in Turkey. The Zoe gives you this in spades. The rooms are charming and comfortable, and I am seriously missing the hammam-style bathroom now that I'm home. Once you've been to the Zoe, you will want to come back.

Room Tip: The Penthouse Suite is a splurge, but absolutely worth it. We loved the bed in its alcove, and it wa...
