“Beautiful breakfast terrace”
Reviewed 19 October 2013

The biggest asset of this guesthouse is the very nice terrace for breakfast, and plenty of things to eat, from nuts to cake, to cereals, fruits, yoghurt, teas, etc. It's also well located, a few minutes walk to the Blue mosque and Aya Sophia. The room we had was very small, but with a cool four-poster bed, a bit of a view, and a well designed bathroom, with a real shower (and not only a pipe coming from the wall, like in some other guesthouses). The wifi works well and the staff is very friendly and ready to help. They provided free transfer from the airport (Atatürk) when we asked, as we were staying three nights.

This cozy little hotel is in an excellent location, close to major monuments and public transportation and to a wonderful shopping/eating street. It has a lovely roof-top restaurant with a good breakfast. Rooms are perfectly fine. We spent three nights here in September and thought it measured up to more expensive places we had stayed in on previous trips to Istanbul. I doubt you can do better for the money.

We stayed at the Alp on two occasions and enjoyed both stays immensely. While the rooms were on the small side, they were nonetheless comfortable and sparkling clean, likewise the bathrooms. The guys on the desk were always friendly and helpful and twice looked after our luggage, even though there was no specific baggage room provided. The terrace overlooking the Sea of Marmara provided wonderful panoramic views and having a lovely buffet breakfast there was a terrific start to any day. Tea and coffee were available there at all times (though there were only paper cups) and a real bonus for us was the provision of hot and cold drinking water. Position perfect in a quiet street only a few minutes' walk from Sultanahmet Square.

Room Tip: Rooms on the fourth floor are a little quieter.

The Sultanahmet area is crammed full of similar hotels, and I would put the Alp Guesthouse on par with any other in the area. It is convenient to all of the Sultanahmet sites, as well as to taxis and public transportation. The main street has lots of restaurants to choose from, most serving a similar menu. There is also a small market and laundry close by. Rooms are small (typical for the houses in this area), but offer everything you need for your stay, including a desk and closet. I found the bed to be very hard, with fairly flat pillows, and only a rough top sheet to cover myself. Needless to say, I did not get the best quality sleep. The top floor terrace is really very nice and the breakfast buffet is almost overwhelming with options. They offer free filtered water to refill your own water bottle. The wifi downstairs is horribly intermittent, but very good on the upstairs terrace. Prices are on par with similar hotels.

Pros: location; free bottled water refill; great breakfast buffet

Cons: hard bed; only rough, flat sheet; flat pillows

Room Tip: Avoid the first floor to limit noise from people entering the building or talking in the entrance.

Arrived late in the evening and was enchanted by the location. Lovely little room with a four poster bed. Bathroom just right, shower excellent. Someone on duty all day every day. Staff helpful. Make sure you ask for advice on restaurants, as our first night we were ripped off by a nearby fish restaurant. Lokantas serve meals where you choose your dish from the varied hotplates and are the most excellent meals ever.... prices varied, but in the Taxim Square area we found a place where we ate lots for a total price of 8 (eight) euros in Turkish Lira. Istanbul is great and the people so so friendly, the city so so clean. Hotel Alp was just wonderful. I strongly recommend it. A week was 500 euros for 2 people. Just go to Istanbul and stay at the Alp for the atmosphere. Oh one thing, be prepared for the Call to Prayer at 0515 each morning for 5 minutes :)

We had a really nice stay at the Alp Guesthouse. The traditional four-poster bed was nice and the breakfast was really good. We found out that they will make you omelets (which wasn't obvious) but they were glad to provide what was requested. I also asked for a toaster, which he found :-) The desk staff were very helpful in organizing tours (whirling dervishes, Bosphorus Cruise, Belly Dancing at Sultanas) and all shows booked were really good and transportation all arranged nicely.
The nice thing about the Alp is that it is just off on a little side street, so a little quieter than the busy road nearby. But it is very quick to get to all of the nearby restaurants and a short walk to the Blue Mosque, Aya Sophia and Topkapi Palace. Highly recommended!
