Owner description: Famed architect Sinan built this majestic structure for one of the greatest rulers of the Ottoman Empire. Although this mosque is less ornate, there are many similarities between it and the Hagia Sophia since the same architect was responsible for both.

“It's just OK”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

This destination is definitely worth seeing, but there's really not much to see. Women will be required to cover up with provided scarves and gowns. Because everyone must take their shoes off, there is a general smell of stinky feet on warm, crowded days. Our recent experience this past June was quite smelly.

When you do go inside, you might only spend 5-10 minutes. There's really not too much to see inside. Since there is no cost, that doesn't really matter. The outside architecture is much more interesting.

“Beautiful Architecture”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

Wouldn't have gone looking for this mosque if not for the Rick Steves guide book, but so very glad we did. The Suleyman Mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques I have ever seen (from an architecture standpoint I thought it was more beautiful than the famous Blue Mosque).

It is out of the way from the other standout attractions of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque but although it was a bit of a walk we didn't have trouble finding it. Again, totally worth the effort. It was designed by Mimar Sinan (Sinan the architect) for the Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent and Sinan's story just adds to the greatness of his structure.

“Stunning atmospheric mosque”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

So much better than the blue Mosque. do not approach from the Spice Museum - it is like climbing Everest! Approach it from the Grand Bazaar to avoid the hike. The mosque is the biggest in Istanbul and is atmospheric inside. We were lucky enough to still be on the hill at the call to prayer and it was an awesome experience as you could hear all of the other mosques within the city and the combined sound was phenonomal
