Owner description: This neighborhood in the modern section of the city is home to many foreign consulates, and is popular for its restaurants and nightlife.

A very sought after residential area of the city for foreigners alike, Beyoglu is in the mind of the visitor, like a Paris in the east… small streets going up and down with cafe, bars, and restaurants at every corner, most of them with a terrace over the sidewalk!

Currently the whole road from Taksim Square down to the Tunel funicular entrance is being repaved so the vintage tram which runs along Istiklal is not currently running.
The current road surface is very uneven and the shops along it, a lot closed do not do justice to the effort required to negotiate it, especially when crowded with locals.

Colonized for centuries by non-muslim minorities and foreign traders, the district of Beyoglu (pronounced be-yoh-LU and formerly known as Pera), across the Golden Horn Strait from the historic center, has always been the cosmopolitan heart of Istanbul. At the turn of the 20th century, locals dressed to the nines would promenade alongside the grand embassy buildings and Parisian-style arcades of Istiklal Caddesi, its main avenue. After a period of negelct in the 1980's, Beyoglu is now reclaiming status as Istanbul's favorite playground, thans to an influx of young Turks and international entrepeneurs. and while Starbuckization is taking its toll on Beyoglu's famed pedestrian artery Istiklal, East and WEst and past and present still clash vividly on the backstreets: grungy boutiques, hipster clubs, and sleek lounges with glamorous Bosporus vistas sit cheek by jowl with tatty kebab dives and gritty meyhane (traditional drinking houses).

Although tourists primarily visit the Old City / Sultanahmet district, it's worth crossing the Galata bridge to Beyoglu to sample the tourist goods, excellent restaurants and cafes, Galata Tower, and a number of lesser known (but very fine) museums. It also features the best local musical instruments along Tunel street.
