Just off the main road, five minutes from the tourist throng, this is a place for the experienced cost-conscious traveller who can cope with a bit of ethnic reality. The side streets of Istanbul are not everyone's delight, but give a glimpse to the not-so-recent past and the realities of life for the population. A good hotel keeps itself up to standard, and trades in narrow margins, so check the price here and know it's good value. Stiff five-minute walk uphill and you're in the mad crowds.

City-centre life at these prices is never going to be 'spacious', and the views of the neighbours a touch intimate and unpretentious. But clean rooms, working showers and polite staff will get you back there.

Lastly - beware the name - at least 3 hotels trading as St Sophia, and avoid the one at Sultanahmet unless fully fit to carry your bags and enjoy the city bustle all day and night.

Overall it was alright for our needs. We only stayed one night so the quirks weren't an issue. The view we had faced a run down apartment building with trash in the lot. I would highly recommend asking for a view of the street and a non smoking room.

There is also another quirk about the air conditioning and lights. The key has an electronic card attached that they give you; you must be insert it in the wall so the air conditioning and lights will turn on. The rooms will become very warm if the airconditioning isn't running while you are gone so I would suggest just taking the key off from the key chain thing and leaving the card in the wall.

The service was pretty decent. They gave me an adapter for my phone charger and helped get us cabs. Everyone I met also spoke good english so communicating was easy.

I would have never stayed here if it wasn't for the hotels price and location. Everything was so easy to walk to and saved me a lot of money on cabs. The breakfast is also traditional turkish with a variety of choices.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the street or end up seeing trash lots. Ask for non-smoking.

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights. Over all was a decent experience. The location is so prime, that all else is forgiveable. The tram station is just 5 mins away. The main tourist centre Sultanahmet is just walking distance. Very near to the Grand Bazaar. Very very well connected for travel. Lots of small and big eateries around the hotel. The rooms are small, toilets comfortable. The hotel staff are decent, not very helpful when in comes to adapters, phone chargers, etc. Breakfast was decent and fresh but was the same on all 4 days we stayed. Air conditioning was not cooling enough and was noisy, but we were too tired to be kept awake at nights. There is a grocery right in front, so one can buy the essentials like water, etc. Don't use the mini bar. Our windows opened to the main street and wasn't very noisy. AC was the major problem over all coz we went during the summers. Overall a 2 star experience. Because the location is so prime, and facilities are passable, all else is forgivable. Excellent for budget travellers. Try it.

I will mention first the hotel location, 5min walking from any direction! Clean and ventilated rooms, old towels, smal bath, comfortable beeds. Services are good, staff friendly for a small tip, helped us to park right in front of the hotel (a miracle in Istanbul). Breakfast, simple but fresh!
We were a large group so rest of details not important, don't count anyway on the wireless... is covering only fist and last floor!
