“Great Reception Staff & Breakfasts, But...”
Reviewed 1 August 2011

Eight days at the Mina - the reception staff were really friendly and exceptionally helpful. They went out of their way to assist my successful purchasing of a ticket to se the Venice Baroque Orchestra at St Eirene. The hotel is close to the Hippodrome and Blue Mosque. The breakfasts were a terrific spread of traditional Turkish food (after all, one is in Turkey) and the breakfast room has a glorious view. The breakfast staff were a bit too keen whipping your plate away before you have quite finished eating. I had booked and prepaid for a double bed but my request for a quiet room meant swapping that booking for twin singles. My room on the 2nd floor was situated in a firetrap cul-de-sac in this elderly hotel building. I was concerned to see fixed no-escape iron bars across the windows. The modern fibreglass shower bath was an interesting challenge as the actual side of the bath was so high that it was quite dangerous stepping in and out of the bath. Pleased I travel with a small rubber bath mat! The Ottoman house adjoining my bedhead wall was being loudly demolished over that entire week and at one stage something like a battering ram hit the wall behind my head and dislodged the actual bedhead close to my head. I have previously stayed close to the Hagia Sophia and would look for accommodation in that area on my next visit to Istanbul

The hotel is clean, although the rooms are quite small.
The staff was very nice and polite, helping us with useful advice all the time.
The hotel was very well located and in a quiet area, so the sleep was very good.
Very close to important locations, like Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar. Many restaurants around.
The view from the restaurant on top floor was wonderful and it was a pleasure to breakfast every day; a good breakfast for my tastes.
I will come back again, as this hotel is good quality for the money paid.

Room Tip: All the rooms are quite the same=small. My advice would be to ask for romms which are not close to t...

We spent 3 nights in Istanbul at the Mina and it was certainly good value for money. The double rooms we were allocated were good sizes and clean (very important). We like the fact that it is a small compact hotel, and the staff were very helpful. Most of the tourist sights are within walking distance, and yet it is located in a quieter part of the old town. Sitting on the roof terrace, with its wonderful views, for drinks at the end of a day's walking and sightseeing is a pleasure.

We were 19 people on a business trip for 2/3 nights and were delighted our knowledgeable local agent (highly recommended too) had chosen such an appropriate and good hotel for us. The staff were friendly and attentive to our needs, the hotel location is very central so no need for transport to get around and the roof terrace views are spectacular. 13 colleagues joined us for drinks and dinner on the roof terrace one night (it easliy accommodated our party of 32 and other hotel guests) and the staff organised the event effortlessly. The bedrooms come in different sizes, are fine for short stays and come fully equipped with the usual amenities, eg minibar, flat screen TV, hairdryer, complimentary bathroom products. The food is good and there's plenty of it. All in all, highly recommend for anyone visiting the centre of Istanbul and who appreciates excellent value.

Room Tip: Roof terrace & upper floors' views!

We arrived for a three day stay on the 2nd June 2011. The first room that we were allocated was a very small double room that had a single high level window. There was not enough room to move around once we got our cases in. We had specifically requested a twin and after some discussion they moved us to a twin room with a window that opened onto a wall less than half a metre away. It was larger than the the first room, we reluctantly accepted it.
After the porter left we noticed a strong smell of urine emanating from between the beds. We summoned Housekeeping who appeared with a very strong smelling spray that eventually obscured the urine smell.
We decided to stay and see how it went. Housekeeping sprayed the room a bit later for good measure.
We went out and had a meal in town, then when we returned later we found a big pool of water in the middle of the bathroom floor. The duty porter came up and investigated and explained that it was a leaking tap, which could not be repaired until the morning. He left a pile of clean towels under the wash basin to absorb the leaking water. Not very satisfactory.
The bath was high sided and was made a good four inches higher than usual by the shower door frame surmounting it. An elderly person or person with a slight mobility problem would have had difficulty in getting into the bath or the shower.
We were not asked whether we had any mobility problems at the time of booking and were not aware of the high sided bath issue?
The first morning the wash basin plug stuck in the plug hole with the basin full of water that I had shaved in. The reception was notified and the plumber would repair it at the same time the leaking tap was repaired.
That evening we returned and noted that the repairs had been carried out. Sadly when we used the wash basin the plug got jammed in again. We asked for it to be sorted out properly that night. The porter arrived with a small screw driver and after some tinkering stated that it would have to wait until the morning which we said was unacceptable. I then stripped out the offending plug mechanism, getting drenched in the process but managed to get the plug working as a temporary fix. The Reception promised to get it repaired properly the next morning. We told them that tomorrow was not good enough. In the event I ended up shaving using running water which was a bit of a waste but "needs must".
The breakfast is a Turkish buffet, any English Breakfast items are charged extra as is fresh fruit juice.
Overall the hotel was dark and dingy. The location is good but that is about it!
Unfortunately this is not a hotel that we would recommend to anyone!

Room Tip: Avoid this hotel.

Great location 5 minutes walk to the Grand Bazzar and many other historic and traditional places in Sultanahmet. The breakfast is buffet and it's good not too bad. The staff very friendly and always trying to help. The only disadvantage we faced is that there is no wireless internet in the rooms, only in the looby.
