“great location, breakfast, rooms, service, view”
Reviewed 4 April 2013

We stayed here mid March 2013. The hotel definitely provides a 3 - 4 star experience and is located only a few blocks from the Cemberlitas (just re-opened, at one end of the Grand Bazaar) and Sultanahmet tram stops. Worth noting is that, unlike a lot of hotels in Istanbul, this one is not down one or more very steep streets, is very near the tram, and has a comparatively large and smoothly running elevator.

The breakfast is very good: varying styles of hot eggs, potatoes, hot dogs, and many types of cold breakfast foods including yogart, cereals, pastries, fruits, olives, and local dishes. The coffee machine makes a very tasty variety of coffee drinks.

The view from the breakfast/lounge and the terrace/bar are amazing and almost 360 degrees. Unfortunately, this non-smoking hotel encouraged smoking in the enclosed terrace by placing many ashtrays around, which made the terrace often uninhabitable (turkish smokes very strong!) after breakfast and in the evenings - a real shame! The view from the rooms facing the front is a beautiful fountain square and a quiet street. The tradeoff was that the bright street lights lit up our room (3rd floor?) like daylight all night long so the black out curtains eliminated the potentially enjoyable sun rises. We would chose a room on the back next time. The beds are huge (took up a too much of the room) and comfortable, the desk adequate, and the bathroom is spacious. The shower is quite large and has very nice tile and a hinged glass door. Oddly, the hinge areas have no seals so any water hitting them pours through onto the floor, and the tiled shower floor is sloped away from the drain so a 1/2" pool of water collects there. The water was hot and plentiful.

The service was very good, including quickly printing boarding passes. Although private airport transfers are available at a substantial premium, there are many door pickup shuttle bus services much less expensive (but take alot longer), and the tram+Metro ride (less than 1 hour to Ataturk) a few blocks away, which costs a maximum of 6 TL (3.20 TL with the Istanbulkart).

If you can get a deal (< $80/night) on this hotel, it is highly recommended.

Room Tip: Street lights are quite bright on front facing rooms, so you may want to consider rooms on back side...

This hotel is perfectly located, next to many interesting things to see, next to a great number of restaurants. The hotel rooms are cleaned, ours was without window unfortunately but very quiet. The bathroom was spacious, clean and new. Nice buffet for the breakfast with a great view on the blue mosque.

Room Tip: Ask a room with a window.

Stayed for 6 nights in November and can't fault the hotel for location, services and staff. Book on their website or deal directly with info at Mina Hotel for deals and if you want a view, expect to pay a bit more and specify that you want a Sea of Marmara view room. Don't complain if you haven't done your homework because not every room is on a top floor with great views. The breakfast room looks out over the city and the sea and staff there are delightful. Add the sweeping views from the terrace, even in late November when I stayed, and you have a magic formula for good priced accommodation close to the major sites and to public transport on the tram from Sultanahmet Station.

Sightseeing for the independent traveller can be difficult when the dreaded cruise ships dock and disgorge their thousands of passengers into the waiting tour buses. It's a good idea to purchase a rechargeable Istanbulkart that can be used on tram, bus and ferry. Don't believe the stall holders around Sultanahmet if they tell you they have sold out of cards and a friendly uncle will show you where you can buy one-then feel obliged to see his store selling ceramics and rugs (at half the price originally on offer when you get up to leave). Take the ferry to Kadakoy (Ciya Sofrasi Restaurant is excellent) and/or Uskudar where you can sip tea on a Sunday afternoon along the seaside promenade looking back towards Istanbul across The Bosphorus. Ferry trip is cheap, use your Istanbulkart for convenience and you get to travel with locals and experience the city from the water without the need to go on a longer Bosphorus cruise.

Room Tip: Deal directly with the hotel and specify that you want a Sea of Marmara view room and expect to pay...

Very good in general. I was given the worst possible room (ground level in the back, looking to an awful patio), then changed to the second floor (rear view again, awful neighboring windows), and then to the fourth floor with a wonderful view to the Marmara Sea. So, got to complain to get what you want.

Room Tip: If you receive a rear room, be sure you get one in the 4th floor.

We have just spent four nights in the Hotel Mina, which was comfortable, clean and had lovely friendly staff, for whom nothing was too much trouble. Our room was on the fifth floor with a sea view, but the window was quite high up and the room very small. Great shower though and we didn't spend much time in the room. Would recommend Floor 4 with sea view as they were larger and had bigger windows as one of our party stayed there. Fabulous breakfasts with loads of choice and the roof terrace, which was shut whilst we were there, would be a wonderful place to have breakfast in the hotter months, with amazing views over the city and the Blue Mosque.

We enjoyed the Bosphorous cruise, the basilica cistern, The Blue Mosque (which was absolutely heaving with people on our visit), the Grand Bazaar and Spice Market of course, and free Whirling Dervish Show if you ask what time he's on, at Cafe Mesale behind the Blue Mosque. Another spectacular restaurant we tried on our last night was Sarnic - live music and the most fantastic space and atmosphere, close to entrance of Topkapi Palace. Hagia Sophia is a must see too.

All in all we loved Istanbul for the people, food and culture. Hotel MIna is in a central location, easy to walk to to all the main places of interest and extremenly good value for money. It was warm too!!

Room Tip: Floor 4 with sea view rooms seem best.

Mina Hotel is within easy walking distance to all of the major tourist attractions in Istanbul, also the tram, but is in a quiet street off the main road. The room is a reasonable size, with comfortable beds and plenty of pillows and a good sized bathroom with good water pressure. Free wifi works very well. Breakfast on the 6th floor is good, plenty of choice and great views. There is a rooftop bar with 360 degree views, which would be good in Summer. The staff are very helpful. Plenty of places to eat nearby and a safe area to walk around at night. Overall we were very pleased with the hotel and the price.
