I enjoyed this museum as a creative and unique space but I think it needs to be made clear (esp. for people who have not read the book) that it is fiction. People assume museums "tell the truth/history" and that is not the case here. The museum brings the fictional story to life in a unique way and I love the idea of giving the book a physical space, however, the objects have been meticulously curated by Mr. Pamuk to support his story/view of Istanbul, they are not the remnants of a man obsessed with a woman he cannot have.

The museum should also remember Mr. Pamuk's own manifesto (posted in the lobby) in which he rejects the idea that major museums which represent the "state" as the only option for sharing history - instead he espouses smaller museums which tell the story of the individual. He wants museums to represent real people and places, yet this museum is dedicated to his fictional characters and admission (with audio guide) was the same as the entrance fee to Topkapi and Aya Sofya - hardly removing any "barriers to entry" that may keep people from the major sites.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the quiet, contemplative feel of the museum (and I had not read the book). The boxes are meticulously created with just enough video and sound to be interesting but not distracting - I just think that they may have lost sight of Mr. Pamuk's own ideas on museums in the process of creation.

It's ok, but clearly a vanity project by the author. Crowded to the point of claustrophobia, and doesn't add very much to the experience of the book. Not bad, but not great...

Take the book for free entry (otherwise 25TL), get the audio guide (only 5TL) and give yourself 2.5 hours minimum. Beautifully designed, well played out, startling innovation.

It makes for a wonderful experience to stay in Istanbul, read Orhan Pamuk's book and visit the museum. The museum brings the book to life. Pamuk has created a masterpiece.
Absolutely loved it.

First of all, you need to read the book. I know it's quite long, but you wont regret it. You will be rewarded by this museum, and you will go through the book again with you memories (If you won't be able to remember all the stuff, there are also several copies in many languages to refresh your mind. Pamuk has a brilliant mind and he will make you doubt if the book was just a product of his imagination or the characters were real. Also, if you bring the book, your first entry is free. Have fun out there!
