“Awesome!”
Reviewed 26 July 2014

Just come back from watching their show "Rhythm of the Dance" - great show. The theatre is in an old hammam which lends itself really well to the very sophisticated light show. The dancers were talented, energetic and had a really good rapport with the audience. There was a selection of dance styles which have been given a modern twist with some really good choreography and musical score. The costumes were exquisite - fantastic colours. Go and see them - time went by so fast!

“Spellbinding Whirling Dervish Show!”
Reviewed 26 July 2014

EXPERIENCE
The Hodjapasha Cultural Centre, in my view, is the best place to watch a Whirling Dervish show. The centre has a fascinating space with good acoustics and atmospheric lighting, the perfect venue for the enchanting nature of the performance. Before entering the hall, do remember to enjoy the Turkish tea and delight at the bar. After enjoying the refreshments, take a seat in the hall to watch the captivating performance as the dervishes glide around the stage in their flowing, white robes. Doubtless, if you want to experience authentic, age-old Istanbul culture, go watch the Whirling Dervish show at the Hodjapasha Cultural Centre!

“Great fun...great talent”
Reviewed 26 July 2014

Some of the reviews are based on the swirling dirvish show. Ignore the reviews and that show. You can see a whirling dirvish at a lot of restaurants and frankly there's not much to see after watching the dancer spin several times. Impressive but not worth a full show.

Instead , check out the Rhythm of Dance show. It's a showcase of eclectic dances from a wide local region (one routine was simply called "dance of the orient"). An energetic, fun, and culturally informative performance. Never bored and captivated by the impressive dancers but also the production. A great venue partially in the round stage with stone walls and great projections that really enriched the performances without distracting (they also gave indication of the locations of each dance routine)

I imagine most of the other shows offered would be great as well. The shows that offer professional dancers or troupes are the ones to go for. Highly recommended. The dervish show as I said can be seen elsewhere and as a religious ceremony I think it odd that it's done as performance anywhere. Anyhow, I wish we had discovered the theatre sooner so we could have seen more than just the one show. Definitely worth the trip.

“Whirling dervishes hmmm”
Reviewed 2 July 2014 via mobile

This is a beautiful and atmospheric venue however The whirling dervish "show" itself left me feeling confused. This is advertised as a performance however it is actually like observing a religious ceremony. The close proximity to the "performers" made me somewhat uncomfortable especially because I and a lot of the audience dozed off at some point during the ceremony. It was very mesmerizing and the live music was beautiful however due to the monotony of the movements and the music it is not really entertainment. It felt more like intruding on something that is meant to be sacred. No disrespect to this cultural experience but the discrepancies between the advertisement and the performance meant that unfortunately the ceremony was not something I particularly enjoyed. The front of house staff in the venue were not friendly and disappeared before the end of the show.
