“Mosque Prayer Time A Draw Back at Grand Hotel Gulsoy In Istanbul”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

Grand Hotel Gulsoy in the Fatih District, Istanbul carries a 4-star designation. It is located in the Fatih district of Old Istanbul right next to the Sultan Mehmed Mosque. The location is in a buy street with strings of restaurants within one block of the hotel. The first night we statyed at the hotel was a disaster, as we were trying to recoup from jet lag. At 4:45 AM the following morning, the public address system of the mosque blared out the announcement of the muslim prayer at the Mehmed Mosque. Needless to say, we were quite annoyed, but could not do anything about it. We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights, and it could get quite noisy at night because of the amount of traffic that flows in the street where the hotel is located. The twin beds that were put together to make a double bed needed some anchoring. Our "double bed" moved away from each other in the middle of the night, and it proved to be quite an experience.

This hotel is also about ten minutes walk from the Sultan Sulayman Mosque, one of the bigger mosque in Istanbul. The restaurant and the food are quite adequate, but not great. There are doner kebab shops literally next door. One big problem occured when we tried to print our our boarding passes for our flight out of Istanbul. If you want to check in line, don't attempt to print out your airline boarding pass from this hotel. Their protocol and policy of printing out boarding boarding passes is horrendously problematic expecially if you cannot read Turkish. Suggest that you check in line but get your boarding pass at the airport. Saves you a great deal of hazzle.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street and at a higher level.

Location is good . Small reception but good service . Bedding is small so if you have a child you need to book extra bed .. bedding is about 90 to 110 cm . Air conditioning is fair .as it shut off automatically when you are out and we stayed the whole day out we came at d night to feel the room is hot .

The Grand Hotel Gulsoy was perfectly located for visiting Istanbul. In the middle of town, it is not far from most of the sites you need to visit in Istanbul, the longest walk being 30mins for the Blue Mosque heading eastward.

The hotel itself caters for most needs. It has a lovely swimming in the basement, dimly and soothingly lit with refreshingly warm, and importantly clean, water. There is also a smaller pool on the terrace upstairs, great for the temperatures we experienced. There is also a small gym in the basement too. The bar is small, but has most alcoholic beverages you may want. The staff are very friendly and helpful, generous in their recommendations for sites to visit, with a map available for good measure. The room itself was clean and well air conditioned.

It has a wonderful view of the Sehazade Mosque across the road. The only downside to this is, if you leave your windows open at night, you may get suddenly awoken at 4am by the 'call to prayer'! However, this wasn't a problem with the windows shut the following night....Overall, a really nice hotel and well worth a stay.

It is across the road from The Sehazade Mosque, and my room faced this Mosque as well looking out towards The Suleymaniye Mosque and the skyline of 'newer' Istanbul across The Golden Horn.
I personally found the 'call to prayers' a soothing part of the rhythm of the day !

The hotel is ideally situated for exploring Istanbul; the Aquaduct is 2 minutes walk, the Grand Bazaar is a 10 minute walk, the Spice Bazaar & Galata Bridge are 20 minutes walk. Whilst The Sultan Ahmed Mosque & the buzz of Sultanahmet are about 30 minutes walk. The walks to these places feel safe and are interesting ! So you can do them as slowly / quickly as you wish !

Additionally, you can organise tours & nights out with the Hotel once you arrive. The reception staff are more than happy to help you with this ! They are very helpful at the reception desk - they even retrieved a lost camera from the shuttle bus !

The rooftop pool was a welcome relief at the end of busy day exploring this vibrant city, with amazing views ! Additionally, the inside pool and spa are great too !

There is also a patisserie / cafe attached to the hotel which do nice and affordable food.

The buffet 'caters for all' breakfast was great.

The hotel is very clean.

I have given 4 stars as the carpet in my room was fraying and required replacing.

I used this hotel as part of a tour through Gate1 Travel. The hotel location is close to all the main attractions in Turkey. The subway station was within walk in distance. Istanbul is a city easy to navigate. Hotel is next to a mosque so the call of prayer was quite interesting. Management was great with an issue my mother had. I recomment this hotel to anyone traveling to this gorgeous and historical city!

Had a one night stay here on the way to a cruise. This was booked through the trip company. The room is smallish but very nice. The reception is helpful and friendly. Booked a massage for hour and half later. Was able to pay to for it later. The location is good. Close to the grand bazaar. Just take the tram.

Room Tip: All the rooms seem to be quiet. The rooms at the front of course look out on the street.
