“Nothing but money trouble with Duo Galata”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2014

As mentioned here before: Duo Galata has a really unprofessional way of handling their business when it comes to money.

There were two instances that left us with a very negative impression.

1. The shuttle service: There were four of us. My girlfriend, her parents and me. We were picked up from the airport as planned and when my girlfriend's parents left a day earlier, they payed for everything (our room as well as the shuttle service fee). When me and my girlfriend wanted to check out a day later, the person at the reception wanted us to pay the 30 € for the transfer. We were fairly sure that my girlfriend's mom had already paid it, but the receptionist denied this. As we had to catch our flight, we just paid it. Upon arrival it came out that the fee had indeed been already paid. Afterwards we wrote several mails to Duo Galata and they even admitted to their mistake and announced to give us back our money. As of now nothing has happened and they have stopped answering to our mails.

2. Breakfast: The first three days me and my girlfriend got orange juice for breakfast (because we don't drink black tea or coffee). On the fourth day there was a new person behind the counter at the breakfast and we ordered our orange juice as usual. When we wanted to leave the dining room, he stopped us and usked us to pay for the orange juice. We told him that we didn't have to pay the days before, but he insisted.

These two event just ruined our whole stay at the hotel. We just had the feeling that we weren't being taken seriously as customers and Duo Galata was just interested in ripping us off. Even though the hotel is quite alright, I'd recommend you to stay at another hotel, because the staff is just really unprofessional. Unfortunately it is also really hard to talk to them, as their English is insufficient to say the least.

This is a relatively new hotel so the rooms and decor are all modern and furnished to create a hip and cool atmosphere. Let me first start with the positives:

- The hotel is located in a central area in Beyoglu and is within walking distance to Galata Tower and Istiklal Caddesi. There are a lot of restaurants, bars and shops around the area and it becomes very lively from the evening onwards. This is great if you want to explore this area but not so convenient if you want to visit the sites in Sultanahmet. We previously stayed in a hotel in Sultanahmet and found that location easier to walk to the historic sites.
- The breakfast provided was great, one of the best we have eaten during our stay in Turkish hotels. You can a good spread of bread, egg, cheese and meat. All fresh and delicious.

Unfortunately our stay in the hotel was not great due to the following:
- Our room was on the highest floor below a rooftop bar. Whilst the room faded the street, noise from the street was insulated by the windows. But what the room didn't insulate against is the music beats from the bar. So imagine having to try to sleep while base beats constantly.
- The air conditioning in the room was not working properly. When we called the front desk to ask if someone could check, the person informed us that it will take a while to cool the room. But that didn't happen and we ended up opening the window and having to listen to the noise outside just to cool the room down.
- The room is small - there wasn't a lot of room so if you have big bags, you may find it challenging.

Just another note to future travellers, the hotel is quite difficult to find. If you are taking a cab, tell the driver it's on Galip Dede Cd and not Sahkulu. Our cab driver dropped us and said that we had to walk because cars cannot go onto the street so we ended up walking 10mins with our bags. But the hotel can be reached by car so don't be fooled by the cab drivers.

I would recommend anyone staying in the hotel to try requesting for rooms not facing the front and not near the rooftop bar. Perhaps without the noise, it would be a more enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Try requesting for rooms not facing the front street and not near the rooftop bar

We had a unpleasant incident when using the airport shuttle service. When we first requesting the shuttle we were told the price would be 25€ for two people. When we went too reconfirmed the time of pick-up and asked the price again we were told again 25€ for two people. On the morning of check out the price magically became 35€ or 100TL. What could we do, we couldn't argue, and we still needed to get the airport. There was no apology from the employee for misinforming us on the price.
In addition, the bathroom sink is in a weird location in the room, it has a very small mirror and there is no place for your toiletries. The view from the window is an overgrown, abandon lot that is the home of a number of dirty, farrow cats. The sun really heats up the room. There is a lot of noise from the lift going to roof bar for most of the night. Employees can be indifferent at breakfast, sometimes even mocking the guests. The location is great except for the up hill walk. Public transportation is close.

Stayed for 2 nights, visiting Istanbul for business. Very convinient location - just 100m from Sishane Metro station on one side, and 100m from Tramway station at Galata Bridge on onother, so taxi is not neccesary. Lot's of small cafes and restaurants around, as well as great nightlife on Istiklal street just hundred meters away.
Very helpful staff, strong Wi-Fi signal, towels changing every day.

The shower was a little bit leaking on the floor, but it's not a big deal.

This is an attractive, clean and well-situated hotel in one of Istanbul's most popular neighborhoods. Clearly, much thought was put into the aesthetics of the rooms, and it shows. They're modern and sleek, extremely clean, and in general well outfitted. However, there were devils in the details.

For example, the sink was located next to the bed, outside the bathroom. Not a terrible idea by itself, except that it left little space for regular bathroom clutter, and there was nowhere to put the hand towel. It was a minor annoyance, but an annoyance, nonetheless. The bathroom itself, while generally well-outfitted with a large tub, was set off by a translucent door with gaps large enough to watch a movie through. For those -- even couples -- who prefer privacy at certain moments (I was suffering from indigestion during my stay), this arrangement could prove awkward.

When we arrived in our room it was hot, and it got progressively hotter. The controls for the air conditioner seemed to have little effect, so eventually we gave in and opened the window. Although this somewhat cooled the air inside, it created a separate set of problems: Galata Duo overlooks a very busy street, and street noise is definitely an issue, particularly with the window open. As it turns out, we were (sort of) to blame for this: The switch to turn on the heat was an unmarked toggle just inside the door, almost indistinguishable from the light switches next to it. We had unknowingly turned it on as soon as we entered the room.

Final complaint: Although the service was generally helpful, when we asked them to recommend a modest restaurant in the area, they sent us to a place that tried to sell us a $100 fish and jumbo shrimp at $25 each. (Thankfully, the rest of the menu was slightly more reasonable.)

That said, Duo Galata is clean, funky and it's in a great location (although you should be aware that you'll have to contend with steep hills to get anywhere from here). The breakfast is good, too.

This hotel is a great place to stay at. The area around the hotel is wonderful. There are many little stores. The pomegranate juice is really good. The public transportation is much better than cabs because cabs could rip you off. I would recommend for anyone. If you go to the mosques don't forget, women and girls have to have scarfs rapped around their head, and have their bodies covered so that not that much skin shows.

Room Tip: I didn't know there was a swimming pool...

These hotels are located in hart of Galata opposite to each other. Reception is in building A, restaurant, cafe, bar and roof bar/restaurant in building B. The street is lovely and almost 24 hours alive, neighborhood is exciting.

My experiences are very good with this hotel. It was clean, comfortable with modern design (watch the cool lightning effects in the bar). Space in (standard) room is small but used very efficient so we could find place even for a big coffer. Staff are friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good, Hoegarden on the roof was amazing (however not cheap).

Some warnings: the windows don't isolate the noise of the street, but it can be get used very quickly. Saturday evening plan your bedtime late because on the roof music can played by a DJ, which you can enjoy also in you room (don't be afraid, it doesn't go till the morning, or ask a room in building A facing backyard).

Some topic for the hotel to develop: Care about the water pipes that they have enough capacity to lead the used water quickly otherwise the quality of the bathrooms will reduce very soon. Change the breakfast variety more often.
