“Great, quiet location near the heart of the old town”
Reviewed 20 May 2014 via mobile

My wife and I stayed four night in early May. We were welcomed warmly and when we asked to change rooms, were accommodated without fuss. Note that the advertised 35 sq m does not apply to all rooms. The staff, location, service and quality of the hotel were all excellent.

This hotel is located in old town within walking distance from major sightseeing spots. The hotel is clean and the staff is very friendly, accommodating and spoke good English. The rooms are fairly large with comfortable beds. No Kleenex in bathrooms. The first night we were disappointed to find out we could not have wine with dinner - the hotel restaurant did not served wine or any alcoholic beverages for religious reasons. Breakfast buffet was available

Room Tip: Be prepare to hear heavy traffic

We recently spent two nights at the Sultanhan, a beautiful hotel right near the Grand Bazaar. The room was spacious and elegant, and the hotel staff was exceptional. When I forgot a bag in the lobby, the Bellman ran down the street at 3 in the morning to flag the cab and give it to me. I was so grateful!

There are several hotels in old Istanbul with the name Sultanhan but this hotel is different from the rest. The Reception area of the hotel is large and marbled with arabesque decor. Above the reception desk is an engraved wood carving which is actually a portion of an ancient wood door carved by artisans in times past. The reception area contains several seating areas complete with framed authentic Turkish robes. There is a large flower arrangement and brass artifacts tastefully placed throughout the reception area, and Turkish rugs. This is the hotel I think of when I think of old Istanbul.

First, the Hotel Sultanhan - Special Class staff are wonderful. They came to know us very well as we always had questions about directions and public transportation. The hotel staff can assist with nearly any request for information. They were able to tell us where to find a grocery store in the neighborhood and they gave us information about the Istanbul Card, which can be used on trams, subways, buses and water taxis. Top notch service, and they have maps of the local sites.

The room we had is at the front of the hotel and noise was not an issue because the hotel is not located on the main road in Old Istanbul. Rather, the hotel is located on a side street about 100 feet from the main road in Old Istanbul. In short, the neighborhood is quieter than staying on the main road in Old Istanbul. Not convinced? Upon reaching the main road in Old Istanbul & turning right - will take you to the Blue Mosque and Haga Sophia which are located 2 blocks away. Turn left at the main road and cross the street to the Grand Bazaar. At the junction of the hotel side street (Piyerloti Cad. No.7 Sultanhmet) and the main road in Old Istanbul is a large cafe.

The hotel also has a terrace breakfast buffet which has views of the city, mosques and the sea. There breakfast is Halal and includes eggs, bread, meat, vegetables, cheese, fruit - the typical Mediterranean breakfast foods. Again the staff working on the terrace were were attentive to those staying in the hotel.

Hotel Sultanhan - Special Class hotel included a Turkish Hamam for those who enjoy the spa experience.

The room we stayed in at the hotel contains bath products and a minibar complete with refreshments. We used room service to order coffee but later purchased a water kettle to make coffee in the room. My suggestion to the hotel is to place water kettles in the rooms. There is a safe in each room and a thermostat to control room temperature. The bed was firm but comfortable and clean linens each day. We did have an issue with the television where the volume would not work and they replaced the existing television with a new one. Estimated time of replacement 10 minutes after we called. There were other guests staying in the rooms around us but we were never bothered by noise. Laundry was given to the hotel before 09:00 a.m. and returned by the late afternoon. We had no issues with the clothing being cleaned.

Most importantly the Hotel Sultanhan - Special Class staff were all professional in their interactions with us. The staff are what makes this hotel great. We never had a negative response from any of our requests. We will definitely be staying at this hotel again.

I am unable to add photos of the hotel now, but I hope to add hotel photos after TripAdvisor approves this review. The email for the hotel is:info@hotelsultanhan.com

Room Tip: Rooms on the front of the hotel are quiet because the hotel is located on a street just off the main...

This is a very late review - we stayed here for four (4) nights in April/May 2013. Hotel is in a fantastic location - very easy to walk to most places or to catch the tram if you wish. The hotel staff members are all very friendly and can speak good English. Lovely breakfast served and a great roof-top bar where you can have an evening drink and watch the sun set over beautiful Istanbul. Rooms are large and clean. Don't think you can see Istanbul in one or two days - you will be very disappointed as there are many outstanding things to see and do.

A calm, wonderful little hotel to start the journey into the city. Ideally situated near the big mosques and Topkapi, it also has a perfect tramvay connection into the other part of town. All you need if you are tired of the huge anonymous hotel buildings.

We stayed for 4 nights and had a great room with a delicious extensive breakfast every day. The location is excellent, and we loved walking along the cobblestone streets to the mosques, underground caverns, and even to Galata Tower. The service was excellent, in-room Wi-Fi very convenient.
