Legacy Ottoman Hotel
Ranked #268 of 1,159 Hotels in Istanbul
Reviewed 20 May 2014

My wife and I traveled to Istanbul in late April, 2014. The Legacy Ottoman Hotel sits in a old section of town, with a view of the Hagia Sofia, The Suliman Mosque, the Bosphorus, the Galata Bridge, and the Golden Horn from the top floor restaurant and bar. The location is excellent. It is a 10-15 minute walk to the furthest of these sites from the hotel. The New Mosque, and Spice market are only a few blocks to the west.
The hotel is a repurposed office building, built years ago with a huge marble lobby, glass and brass elevators, and a six floor atrium in the center. There are exterior and interior rooms. The interior rooms were reported to be stuffy, since they only open to the interior atrium. The heating and air conditioning system seems to be an either/or situation. During our visit, they had not switched over to A/C for the summer, and the exterior rooms opening windows kept them nice and pleasant. The neighborhood is amazing quite late in the night. The Call to Prayer broadcast from the nearby Mosque's minarets seems to come at the first twilight of dawn, not sunrise. For us, it was at 5:15AM. This changes throughout the year. After a few days, we got used to it, and slept right through it.
Most of the hotel has been recently renovated. The bath rooms were top notch. The rooms were generously sized. Beds are often two twins, although some rooms had them pushed together. One of the floors was still under renovation.
The upstairs restaurant served a fantastic Turkish buffet breakfast. Salads, olives, cheeses, breads, yogurt, cereal, and more western eggs and sausages (beef only), along with tea, coffee, and juices.
Although we had been told to avoid the water, even while brushing our teeth, no body in our party had any problems, even though we quit trying to use bottled water to brush after about a day.
I would highly recommend the hotel, and would stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for an exterior room if the summer air conditioning system has not been turned on.

This hotel should be 5* hotel, but is definitely not!The room was large, but bathroom was very old! In the evening we didn't have much hot water. Breakfast wasn't great either. Only good thing was absolutely fantastic location in heart of Istanbul.

1st room- single, not refurbished and very offensive bathroom odour-1 night. (6th floor)
2nd room- single, refurbished and no smell, clean and comfortable-2 nights ( 4th floor)
3rd room-twin share, spacious, clean and comfortable, occasional sewerage odour but quickly dissipated -2 nights (4th floor). Be careful of internal rooms that look down into the foyer and not outside.
Breakfast - tasty and plentiful food.
Terrific location and able to walk or use tram to go everywhere on European side of Istanbul.
Staff reasonably helpful.
Biggest complaint was lack of air conditioning in a "5 star Hotel". It is apparently being installed soon.....

Room Tip: Avoid small internal rooms, without a view.

I would have liked to have rated this hotel stay much higher, but found another star would only encourage management to stay the course in guest treatment, rather than to strive to a higher standard. On a trip to Turkey, we had booked three extra nights at this hotel, since it was also the hotel where our travel group would be staying. We came in earlier to spend more time exploring Istanbul - a fantastic city! However, we rapidly discovered that when the hotel started undergoing major renovations, guests were forced to accept a substandard hotel experience. Jack hammers reverberated throughout the lobby during evening cocktail hours - to the point where it was impossible to sit and have a drink and quiet talk. Management was advised. They apologized and it continued for hours thereafter. The main elevator to guest rooms was closed - not for repair, but because management decided to clean it at the time when guests usually return from a day out. This forced guests to traipse to the other side of the hotel; get off at a higher floor, use the stairs then walk back across the length of the hotel once again, in order to go to a guest room. And the last straw was management's decision to allow workmen to remove bathroom fixtures, construction, debris as well as to continue working with their equipment, heaving garbage out and carrying on in loud voices until 1AM in the morning. Two requests to the desk gave assurances that it would end - first before 10PM; then when another call was given - a promise of a little while more; and finally management stating that it would continue thru the night until all work was done! Management failed to notify guests of this work at check-in; failed to be proactive so as to minimize a guest's discomfort UNTIL the guest made specific complaints about these problems. It was only after these complaints were directly given to management that any attempt was made by staff to help. One solution they had was to show up at my door, unannounced, when we complained again about the night work. They wanted to move us right then and there! We were already in bed! All suitcases had been unpacked. We were on a vacation! It was close to 11PM! As such, one can only question how important a guest's visit is to the hotel. Legacy Ottoman is rated as a 5 star hotel. I have extensively traveled the world and I have yet to enounter a 5 star hotel that would tolerate such disruption of a guest's comfort - business or pleasure. There were other issues as well - staff not properly stocking and restocking bottled water, coffee and tea packets, etc. on a daily basis, thereby requiring a guest to constantly call to request same for the room; dead flowers on the breakfast and dining room tables which should have been removed when they gave their last gasp - most unappealing when one sits down to eat; waiters not promptly attending to a diner's needs when seated - i.e. drink order, bread basket, order taking - requiring a guest, at times, having to get up and find a waiter. In all, while these things may be minor when viewed as individual annoyances, collectively they demonstrate a need by management to work more diligently at making a guest's experience at the hotel a positive memorable experience, rather than what we experienced. That said, the hotel definitely has a few things going for it - the staff are friendly; the location is simply excellent; and the hotel is very, very clean - and has a lovely interior. I should mention that the hotel has just been bought by another company and trust that the priority for the hotel will be the needs of their guests going forward.

Room Tip: Room prices and sizes vary widely. Rooms facing the street on the lower floors are very noisy due to...
