“excellent boutique hôtel on the Asian side”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

we enjoyed it thoroughly: top location at the Bosphorus on the Asian side, quiet and relaxed place, stunning views, stylish interior design. Overall we can highly recommend and we will definitely return.

Room Tip: Loft Suite Rooms can be highly recommended as they have their own gardens viewing the banks of the B...

Four days at this hotel closed out two weeks in Istanbul, and what a great conclusion. A beautiful location, quiet if you want it, yet just minutes away from the thriving centers of Istanbul. The views of the Bosporus are wonderful and joined with extremely pleasant and comfortable interior design. The hotel runs its own boat so you can go immediately across the Bosporus to the European side. The food is excellent, either at the excellent waterside restaurant, or the first-rate restaurant next door adjoining the hotel. The staff are extremely helpful. We definitely intend to visit again and highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: This is a small hotel, and from what we saw, there are only good rooms and suites.

If you have had a few days negotiating the crowds around the main tourist sites of Istanbul, or even a couple of days just ambling around this wonderful city and find yourself in need of a quiet space to get away from the crowds of tourists and locals then Sumahan on the Water is the place to be. Quiet, relaxing and away from it all yet still making you feel a part of Istanbul this hotel is an ideal place for a night or two. Well designed rooms, courteous staff, good food and a place to sit and relax by the Bosphorus watching the ships passing by on their way to the Black Sea or from there to the Sea of Marmara and beyond. Day or night the view is enchanting as you look across from the Asian side to the European side.

There is a complimentary boat to pick you up and take you back to the main part of Istanbul but the times are a little eccentric and could do with some revision but it will save you a boring taxi ride from the local ferry port.

Room Tip: If you can get a room on the ground floor and step out onto the lawn at will and enjoy the view

We stayed here on our wedding day. It has a perfect view of the Bosphorus. It is like dream. It is located at a place where there is a risk of traffic at weekend but they have the sea transfer, so nothing to worry about. The rooms are very nice and food is very good quality. Service is so nice as well. Highly recommended to really enjoy the best of İstanbul

our visit is some time ago and still is in my mind and my soul. This little hotel has just a few rooms - each with wonderful views on the Bosporus. Beautiful interior design. Very nice food. No huge breakfast area as in most hotels. Very easy access to the water taxi to drive to town - and what a different way to travel than usual. One might not be directly in town - but I did not regard that as a disadvantage once.

As a family of 5 we stayed here in April 2014. It is a truly special place with wonderful rooms, charming staff and the most amazing views of Istanbul from the Asian side of the river. It is right on the banks of the Bosphorous so its position is unrivalled. It was wonderful to sit and have an early evening drink outside and watch the sun set over the Blue Mosque! The hotel has an excellent cafe for lunches and supper and a superb restaurant - Tapasuma - for dinner. Sumahan On The Water must be one of the very best places to stay in Istanbul!

An old family-owned distillery on the Asiatic shore of the Bosphorus, two young architects with a dream, 25 years of challenges to overcome and so was realized the magnificent Sumahan on the Water Hotel in Istanbul.
We had the pleasure of a double stay at the Sumahan Hotel during March-April 2014. Owner-architects, Mark and Nedret Butler, personally supervised and/or attended in a hands-on-manner to the comfort and needs of their lucky guests.
Every room/suite faces the Bosphorus with expansive water views toward the European shore. The rooms/suites are elegantly and comfortably appointed, exceptionally clean and quiet. The discrete reception and housekeeping staff were respectful, dependable and knowledgeable.
The included Turkish breakfast buffets were superb and dinners at the renown Tapasuma restaurant on-site were memorable not only for the creative cuisine but also for the well-measured, attentive yet unobtrusive service.
An exceptional complimentary treat of the Sumahan Hotel is their private launch, Sumahan 1, which whisks guests back and forth across the Bosphorus. Too romantic!!
The Sumahan Hotel remains on our short list of places to enthusiastically return to.

Room Tip: All the rooms/suites and lofts are gorgeous. During the busy season, quarters further from the resta...
