“best traditional eastern food”
Reviewed 11 June 2012

This place is a hidden gem in the middle of Kadikoy, in my opinion the best place to spend some time in Istanbul. The place is crowded nearly always with locals (who can afford a moderately pricey meal) and tourists who want to taste different food from all around Turkey. Whatever you eat is the best in Istanbul, and whatever you eat, don't forget to ask for a complimentary "Kaynar", a traditional drink from southern Turkey that relieves your stomach after a delicious meal.

“Average experience in over-hyped restaurant”
Reviewed 4 June 2012

I’ll preface this by saying we were really looking forward to eating at Ciya. Maybe we were sucked in by the Bourdainesque hype. The food was fine - if someone had told us to go inside and have a look at all the dishes on display, or tell us that there was a great salad/mezze bar, it would have been even better. Unfortunately the unfriendly big waiter looking after the tables out the front ruined the whole experience for us. Threw the menus at us, didn’t want to engage anyone and was altogether rude to everyone seated outdoors that lunchtime. Shame we didn’t get one of the smiling staff talked about in other reviews!. Everywhere else we went in Istanbul had amazing, friendly waitstaff. It certainly didn’t live up to the hype...

“Good Food, Indifferent Service”
Reviewed 31 May 2012

We enjoyed the highly-touted food, which included some of the tastiest hummus we've ever had. We liked the yogurt soup better than the lentil soup, and especially enjoyed the salad bar. Bread was nothing special, but we liked a spinach dish that had grains and a yogurt sauce. A green fig dessert was great. We visited on two different occasions, and enjoyed both, but agree that friendly service would most certainly enhance the dining experience.

“My favorite restaurant in Istanbul”
Reviewed 29 May 2012

These days, you can find other places doing regional food in Istanbul, but this is still the first and best. Skip the menu, and look inside at the options behind the glass - they rotate depending on what is in season, and they're often like nothing you've tasted.

If you are not an adventurous eater, skip this place. Otherwise, it will likely be one of the best meals you have on your trip.
