“Wonderful Experience”
Reviewed 28 November 2010

I stayed at W Istanbul during January 2010. It was located in a quiet area within central Istanbul with lots of high end designer shops all around. The staff were extremely helpful. The property was not very big (a 3 story building if im not mistaken) with narrow corridors to the rooms, however, the decoration was just amazing. I stayed at a "Fabulous" room category, and it was spacious and the decoration was quite impressive and creative, not the normal way 5 star hotel rooms are decorated but you will definitely like it. Breakfast buffet was delicious, it felt like there was so much effort in preparing the food. One bad thing about Istanbul is that Taxi drivers are the worst I have seen, and the best thing is to take a taxi that waits outside the hotel through the W hotel staff (at least you will not be overcharged on your way out). All in all, it was a good experience, and I would definitely choose the W hotel if I would ever go to Istanbul again.

The hotel is located at a very nice neighborhood but is 15-min walk to any public transportation. The rooms were very small and the decor felt like a rent-by-the-hour establishment. The staff tried to be helpful and were generally nice. As SPG platinum they would not give me free breakfast but only free wifi. I can think of better options next time I visit beautiful Istanbul.

I stayed at this hotel with a number of clients and colleges and over two nights and found the service a bit hit and miss in that I (we) would receive great service from one member of staff and indifference service from another, specifically at the bar.
The design of the hotel is quite unique and I think stepping into the hotel is like a marmite moment; you either hate it or love it. I personally really liked the decor and found the room not only well equipped but very comfortable. One thing though, everything seemed to be hidden behind a door so you have to do a bit of investigating before you found out where everything was. Overall I had a good stay at this hotel and I would choose this hotel again if I was on business however if I was visiting Istanbul as a tourist I may have chosen a hotel that was more centrally located but that is purely a personal choice and should not dissuade you from choosing this hotel.

Well, Hello There,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us and other travelers. All feedback is valuable and we take it seriously. We apologize that you did not receive consistent service from every single W Talent. Our team works hard everyday to deliver exceptional W service and we will take this feedback and use it for continuous training. It is wonderful to hear that you really liked the design of our hotel and felt that the guestroom was comfortable. We are recognized locally and internationally for our unique, desing-led hotel. We hope to see you back soon to give us another opportunity to WOW you.

This hotel is almost garishly modern in its decorations, with neon glows and plastic fake jewels in the elevator. It looks more like a nightclub entrance than a hotel entrance, which is not to our taste but might appeal to others.

The room, however, was wonderful. We stayed in a Fabulous room on the top floor - it was spacious, had a skylight and private balcony, an enormous rain shower, and a very comfortable king bed. The additional touches of music and mood lighting made us choose to stay in the room instead of going outside on several occasions.

The hotel is the center piece in a development that includes upscale shops and restaurants, but is rather removed from other attractions in that part of the city. We had already spent several days in the old city, and we deliberately chose this hotel in order to have a quiet end to our trip; we would not recommend this hotel as the sole location from which to explore Istanbul.

The hotel is near the Bosphorus, so you can walk to the pier and take a local ferry along the Bosphorus - a much cheaper alternative to the touristy cruises. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk to the nearest tram station. It is also about a 20 minutes cab ride to Ortakoy, a nice area with great food, but the evening traffic is horrendous.

The conciege did book a couple restaurants for us, but we were not impressed with the options presented to us nor the conciege's attitude. The hotel clearly caters to the young moneyed crowd (the Bosphorus night club crowd?), which we expected, but we were a bit disappointed that the hotel and concierge seemed poorly equipped to cater to any other demographic.

We found a cute wine bar around the corner from the hotel (north side) which we recommend for both wine and small plate snacks.

Hi there,
Thank you so very much for coming to stay at the W Istanbul and thank you for taking the time to share your experience. The hotel is very design-led, with a mix of W energy and Ottoman influence. So glad to hear that you really liked your guestroom. Happy that you found the location convenient for seeing the "Old City" and for exploring other areas of Istanbul. We have shared your feedback with our concierge, as we are always looking to improve. The wine bar next to the W is called Corvus and is one of the top turkish wines. They do have great wines and appetizers.
Warm Wishes,
The W Istanbul Team

You get the typical W experience here- dark lobby, pounding music, walls that glow bright pink, and a room so modern it is difficult to find the toilet immediately. Still, my husband and I enjoyed this hotel. The service was solid, and the concierge was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Our room was on the lower floor and had a private outdoor sitting area- very nice touch. The shower was fantastic!

The hotel is in a residential area, not in the touristy old district of Istanbul. We really enjoyed staying a bit outside of the touristy area. We could walk around at night without being hassled by people, which was not the case elsewhere. After taking a couple of frightening cabs to and from the old city, we decided that the light rail would be much better for our wallets and our safety. The light rail is a short walk (10 minutes or so) from the hotel.

We stayed over Easter weekend, and we were surprised to find a little bag of chocolate Easter eggs tied to our door one evening. It was a very nice touch, especially considering that Easter is not a holiday in Turkey.

My one complaint is with the restaurant. We had breakfast at the hotel one morning. We asked the price of the breakfast buffet, and the waiter told us (the price was not printed anywhere). When we received the bill, the price was significantly higher. The manager was not all that willing to reduce the bill to what we had been told until we threw a bit of a fit. I understand that there is a language barrier, but this is why prices should be clearly marked on the menu (a la carte prices were printed). It seemed to me that this was par for the course at this restaurant, and it rubbed me the wrong way. After that experience, we decided to eat breakfast at Café Nero for the remainder of our stay.

If we visit Istanbul again, I would gladly stay at the W Istanbul.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experieces with us and other travellers. It is great to hear that you enjoyed your stay and received great service, even though the design of the hotel was not your preferred style. The Akaretler, Bestiktas and Nisantasi areas are great for walking and for experiencing Istanbul as a resident. We really apologize for the experience you received in our restaurant and have shared this with the management team. It is wonderful to hear that when you come back, you will stay at the W again.

My wife and I had a great first trip to Istanbul. Here is some info that might be helpful about the hotel and the city.

Room: Upgraded to king size room upon arrival as we are SPG Gold Preferred Guests. As with any W Hotel, this one was also very trendy, hip, and eclectic. Room was typical European size and had nice amenities such as Bose stereo with iPod dock, safe, balcony, etc. Separated toilet and shower was also nice. The rainfall shower head was one of the biggest I have seen and was very relaxing to take a nice shower! The only thing you will have to get use to is the dozen of so light switches. But overall, great room with comfortable bedding typically seen with Starwood properties.

Service: The staff was very attentive during our whole stay and was always more than willing to help you get whatever you might need. Concierge was helpful in restaurant recommendations but it might be a good idea to let them know in advance what your price range/budget is so they can steer you in the right direction.

Location: The W Istanbul is located in the "new" part of the city. The new part is where all the action is from a ton of cafes, restaurants, bars, lounges, shopping, etc. The old city (esp. the sultanahmet area) is full of tourists so you should do you research before you eat there as the potential for "tourist traps" is probably higher. The W Istanbul is in an area called Besiktas which in itself has a good local scene full of cafes, restaurants, bars, etc within walking distance. The local tram to the old city is about 1 mile away so definitely walkable. Takism and Beyoglu is about a 15 min taxi ride (could be double depending on traffic however).

Tips: A few blocks up from the hotel is a liquor store if you need to get wine, beer, etc for your room. You can get a bottle of local wine for the cost of what 1 glass would cost in the hotel bar (although you pay for the trendy scene I guess). Some of the must do's are seeing all the beautiful mosques, experience the grand bazaar, visit the spice market, and take a cruise down the bosphorous! In Beyoglu, there are a ton of good seafood restaurants, esp. on Navizade street. The best durum kebab (sandwich) and lentil soup was at Durum Zade (as seen on Anthony Bourdain). All in all, we truly enjoyed our first visit to Istanbul and our stay at the W Hotel. Taking into consideration the cafes, restaurants, bars, shopping, ease of transportation to old city and experiencing the "local scene" we would recommend staying in the new part of Istanbul. Istanbul is truly a walking city, so you should take every opportunity to walk anywhere and everywhere to get the real experience. Sometimes getting lost is the best part!

Hello There,
We do love our SPG guests! It is wonderful to hear that you really liked your room in the W. There are several different lighting options, this aligns with our passion for design. Our W "Talent" is very special and thank you for sharing about your positive service experiences. The W Istanbul is actually located in an older part of the city. Akaretler was built in the 1870s as an annex to the Dolmabahce Palace. It was redeveloped and reopend in 2008. The area feels very contemporary and new now :) There are some great areas up the bosphorus as well such as Arnevutkoy and Bebek.
Hope to see you back soon,
The W Istanbul

My husband and I used points to stay 8 days at the W in Istanbul. It was his first, my second trip to the country and we loved it. Although the reception/lobby were very different than our usual choices in hotels (think St. Francis in San Francisco or quaint Eurpoean in Rome), we grew to love the atmospohere when walking in to the hotel (through metal dectors ) each evening. There is not enough seating in the common area, however to use the free Wi-Fi easily. Our room (on the 4th floor) was not huge, but big enough for the two of us. We did find enough drawer space for the week, using the side tables. The bed was sooo comfortable. A great sleep after walking the seven hills of Istanbul. My husband is 6"4" and did find it hard to find a place to sit in the hotel that was comforatble for a man his size, Even the chairs on our small deck where cramped.
We really enjoyed the neighbourhood and location. We walked at night to the Beskitas neighbourhood, enjoyed great fish meals at side walk taverns..Watched our fish being cleaned at the local fish market.and then walked over to the restuarant. The energy and non tourist atmosphere were just what we had hoped to have on this vacation. We, too found the grocery store and bought many bottles of local red wine to enjoy on the deck. We walked to and from the tram, did not find it to be a problem at all. (we are in late 50's and from a small midwest town). The stroll along the Bosphorus with the palace and mosque was a lovely change from the crowded bustle of Sultanhemet. We even saw a man with cart, donkey and firewood on the busy street one evening.
Cem, the conceriage, arranged a delightful tour to Cappadocia for us and was very helpful in making local dinner reservations for the two evenings we requested his help. We also did a cruise on the Bosporus, leaving from the ferry stop, just 5 minutes from the hotel. There is a safe ATM just 2 minutes from the hotel enterance.
We did find a much cheaper shuttle service from the airport on the internet, however, than what he had offered.
I would definately stay here again.

Hi there,
So happy to hear that you enjoyed your week with us at the W Istanbul in the Akaretler district and we LOVE the beds too! We apologize that your husband found the chairs too small for him and management will take this comment into consideration. I am thrilled that you spent time in the neighboring Besiktas area, the fish restaurants are delicious and lively and you do get the feeling of a local, which is what makes travel fun. It is great to hear that you will stay with us again and please let us know when you are looking to return.
Sincerely,
The W Istanbul
