The house sit at the top of high hills and the ride up is a visual delight. I was with several Roman Catholics who were obviously emotionally touch at this historic and special place. And they left with their empty water bottles filled with holy water.

“If you are going to Ephesus you should stop here too”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 July 2014

This site, on Mt. Koressos, is supposedly where Mary lived the final years of her life. Our guide shared with us the interesting story of how this house was discovered in the 19th century. It’s location came as one of many visions by the Blessed Anne Emmerich, a Roman Catholic nun, which were published as a book. In 1881, a French priest used Emmerich's book to search for the house and found it based on the descriptions. Impressive. The Vatican has taken no official position on the authenticity of this location as her actual home, but several Popes have visited and it has been declared a holy place. Religious significance aside I was moved while walking to and from the home. Turkey can be hot, but this stone home was built on the north side of the mountain currently amongst a grove of pines, which made the setting much cooler than the surrounding area. I wondered if a similar grove existed those many years ago and if so was that part of the reason for the homes location. There was a referent silence to the place except for the peaceful chirps of birds. The house itself was larger than I expected for a 2000-year old dwelling (much has been rebuilt). We didn’t stay long and were soon on the bus again to Ephesus, or as our intrepid guide Lufte pronounced it Ephesoooos (as in Dr. Seuss).

“A Place of Beauty and Contemplation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2014

I wouldn't go to Ephesus without also taking in the Virgin Mary's House, even if it is an extra price and an extra drive. The area is well shaded, soothing, and peaceful. I found the house itself conducive to prayer or contemplative thought. It was a memorable part of my journey.

“Definitely worth seeing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2014

We were hesitant about going to turkey, however, we were very pleasantly surprised! The people were inviting, warm and friendly. We wanted to see the Blessed Mother's last living place. We were very moved by this experience. It was lovely! There is a wall where people write their requests and wishes to the Blessed Mother Mary. They are written on cloth that you should bring with you, and tied to other cloths on the wall. They say if your desire comes to pass you must go back to turkey to retrieve your cloth. There is a beautiful store to purchase holy items before leaving. The money you spend goes to upkeep the property. There is also a fountain where you can obtain holy water. DO NOT use the terracotta jug given to you by tour directors as my friends all leaked.
Definitely a worth seeing experience
