The Terrace houses require an extra fee but it is so well worth it. It is being actively worked on by archaeologists and you get to see their painstaking work close up.

“Worth seeing”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

It was worth the extra 15TL to see the details of the houses on the hill. Located along the marble street it provided a nice break from the crowds. Under the canopy of the protected renovation area there is a designated walkway of steps and glass walkways that take you throughout the many dwellings. You will see frescoes, several of them restored, and beautiful mosaic floors. Takes about 45 minutes with stair climbing. Surprised by how few people take in this side excursion. Well worth supporting the renovation underway. Would love to come back in a couple of years to see the progress.

“Worth paying the extra for”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

Definitely worth going in and seeing and there is still heaps of archeological work taking place in the terrace houses. The mosaics come up brilliantly and you get a real sense of the way people lived. Be prepared to climb a lot of steps.

“Well worth the extra fee, especially if you like air conditioning”
Reviewed 25 June 2014

Ephesus becomes a cross between Shinjuku railway station and a crowded bus in Rome when the bus loads of tourists upon it in the mid morning. In the summer heat, this can be extremely unsettling as you ponder the meaninglessness of modern tourism. Fortunately, you can retreat to the Terrace houses, as the bus tours will be on a tight budget and tight deadline, where they will not be willing to outlay any additional time or money on this extra bit of Ephesus.

The houses are currently being explored / restored, so you can see archeologists at work. There has been a major investment in cat walks and viewing platforms, so you can get up close to every room in these houses without disturbing the fragile interior decorations and artwork. Really great to see this being done. Oh, and it is air conditioned as well.... almost inspires you to become an archeologist!!!

“Definitely worth a visit if you are going to Ephesus.”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

The building where the Terrace Houses are being renovated is very large and there is a lot to see and read about in there. The houses are well preserved as are the many paintings inside each of them. One of our favorite parts was actually seeing the workers in action preserving the houses while we toured here. It was very interesting and should definitely not be missed!
